Editor-In-Chief/Co-Founder
In 2014, I co-founded an online literary magazine which, to date, has published 19 issues (including a beta issue titled "Issue 0") and has featured the work of more than 80 writers and 40 illustrators and photographers. Of the 90+ pieces we've published, a number have gone on to be published as parts of novels, in story and essay collections, and reprinted elsewhere on the internet and in print magazines. Our diverse group of writers and interviewees have ranged from National Book Award and Man Booker Prize winners, to revered figures in the U.S. publishing industry, to emerging voices. As Editor In Chief, I've had a hand in all of the magazine's operations, including editorial, art, content strategy, and design decisions; collaboration on social media campaigns, the magazine's newsletter, and other communications outreach; and helping to coordinate and successfully fundraise $12k upon our launch in 2014, in order to run a year's worth of issues and offer payment to our contributors. I have also solicited pieces and worked one-on-one with our writers in an editorial capacity, and have helped solicit content for the magazine's book excerpt feature, Small Plates. To date, the magazine has been featured by the New York Times (online edition), BuzzFeed Books, Flavorwire, The Toast, The Billfold, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, Largehearted Boy, and Vela Magazine, among many others.
Freelance Editor & Writer
Editorial has included Medium, where I was part of the vertical editorial team. Writing work has primarily involved literary and book-based journalism, including cover story features, profile pieces, interviews with authors, and listicles. Clients/publications include the National Book Foundation, BuzzFeed Books, Kirkus Reviews, Flavorwire, Men's Journal (online edition), and The Rumpus.
Grants Coordinator
Sub-contracted to assist with the management of donor-advised funds and data, due diligence, fiscally-sponsored projects, grant-based narratives, grant-based budgets, and governmental grants. Clients included the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation and Community Initiatives.
Senior Fiction Editor
Fiction Editor
Senior Bookseller/Manager Of Paper Goods
Aside from my role as a member of senior bookselling staff, I managed the yearly budget of the independent bookstore's stationery products. I met with greeting card sales representatives on a regular basis, and formed business partnerships with independent vendors in order to meet yearly profit goals and curate an eclectic and diverse selection of greeting cards for the store.
Interviews Editor
As The Rumpus's founding Interviews Editor, I solicited, developed, edited, and published over 300 long-form literary and culture-based interviews, some of which have been anthologized or reprinted as supplemental material in paperback editions of books. Some highlights include Zadie Smith, Oliver Sacks, Jesmyn Ward, Edwidge Danticat, Fady Josiah, and Eve Ensler. I also helped launch and/or publish several interview series, including "The Big Idea" and "Conversations with Literary Ex-Cons," working with the series' authors to develop content, voice, style, and tone. In addition to a rigorous publication schedule that involved publishing three interviews per week, I assisted with the copyediting and formatting of Sunday Rumpus interview content, as well as the transcription and editing of monthly Rumpus Book Club and Poetry Club interviews.
Contributing Editor
I was part of the editorial team for Editorially's STET, a magazine which illuminated how the company's product—a collaborative writing tool—functioned on a publishing platform. I solicited content, and worked with writers and tech creatives like Roxane Gay, Erika Hall, Jen Lowe, Jim Ray, and Allen Tan to develop robust articles that examined the intersections between technology and culture. In early 2014, Editorially was acquired by Vox Media; as a result of the acquisition, the company's co-founders joined Vox's product team, while our small editorial team continued on to other publishing ventures.
Client Specialist
Primarily worked with philanthropic advisors on large-format granting dockets, as well as managed the flow of grant money from donor-advised funds to Tides's fiscally-sponsored projects.
Grants Assistant
Assisted with the foundation's weekly grants process, including the granting of funds from donor-advised funds, due diligence, the reading of budget narratives, updating grantee organizational information, reconciling weekly grant-based financial reports, and the editing of donor-advised fund letters to grantees.
Production Assistant/Intern
I worked with the now-defunct Wholphin DVD Quarterly, a film magazine, and solicited short films from filmmakers and producers, researched film festivals in order to acquire film submissions, watched and helped curate submissions, and acted as the liaison between the directors of the magazine and potential contributors.
