About Rebecca Sutton

I am an international lawyer, humanitarian researcher, consultant and development professional with 20 years of experience working for academic institutions, governments, and NGOs on themes of war, human rights, humanitarianism, child protection, protection of civilians, civil-military interaction, development, civil society, (youth) peacebuilding.My book, the Humanitarian Civilian, was published by Oxford University Press in 2021, and my scholarship appears in peer-reviewed journals such as the Leiden Journal of International Law, African Affairs, and the Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law. My research has been funded by: the Leverhulme Trust; the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation; the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada; the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO); the Arthur C. Helton Foundation.I have lived, worked and conducted research in the following countries: Darfur, Sudan; South Sudan; Central African Republic; Cox’s Bazaar (Bangladesh/Myanmar); Indonesia; Thailand; Romania; South Africa; Ghana; northern India; Indigenous communities in Canada.I routinely consult for humanitarian and peacebuilding organizations, and since 2015 I have been working as a freelance Trainer and Facilitator.
