During my second semester I curated an exhibit (“For Young Naturalists:” Ocean Ecology in Children’s Literature) drawing from the collection and both wrote and designed accompanying materials, including the exhibit poster and press release.

Independent ResearcherUniversity Of Connecticut Feb 2011 - May 2014Storrs, CtOver the course of four years, with most work completed during my junior and senior years, I conducted archival research under the tutelage of Dr. Matthew McKenzie, Dr. Christopher Clark, and Dr. Françoise Dussart on 19th century New London-based whaling and sealing at the sub-Antarctic islands of Heard, Kerguelen, and South Georgia for a combined Honors thesis and University Scholar project. This project received funding from the NCHC Portz Fellowship, University of Connecticut Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF), and the University of Connecticut Honors Holster Grant. In July 2013 I traveled to Australia to conduct archival research at the State Library of Tasmania, Australian Antarctic Division Library (Hobart, Tasmania), National Library of Australia (Canberra, ACT), State Library of New South Wales (Sydney, New South Wales), and the State Library of Victoria (Melbourne, Victoria). I conducted additional research at the Mystic Seaport Museum (Mystic, CT) and the Smithsonian Archives in Washington, DC. In May 2014, I produced a sixty-page thesis entitled The Sea-Scavengers: Adapting New London's Nineteenth-Century Whale Fishery in its Final Years.
