Geologist
Conducted baseline watershed surface water flow and water quality studies. Participated in stream restoration projects, including surveying, stream function assessments, stream type and geomorphic assessments; data analysis and calculation of hydraulic conditions; and restoration design assistance and reporting to required agencies.Managed and conducted field work for surface water quality baseline studies used for planning and permitting. Have been studying and begun to utilize the Stream Functions Pyramid Framework and recent Minnesota Stream Quantification Tool used for stream mitigation debit and credit.Conducting a field evaluation of the sediment substrate within the St. Louis River Estuary sites for determining suitability of wild-rice seeding and restoration. Work included field evaluations and documentation of sediment substrate parameters, field data analysis, development of wild-rice restoration suitability model in ArcGIS, and documentation and report preparation.
Gis Specialist - Intern
During my internship with the City of Duluth Planning Department, I combined my knowledge in GIS, environmental science and community planning to facilitate the spatial analyses for the City of Duluth's 2035 Comprehensive Plan. I worked closely with the City of Duluth and third party entities to compile and evaluate infrastructure, natural resources, land use, zoning and city demographic datasets in order to address key policy matters in Open Space, Transportation, and Housing Development. I also created maps and visuals for community planning events to facilitate in the collection and development of GIS datasets, which would be a direct reflection of the community's spatial patterns, insights and requests, assisting in the analyses used to develop planning and policy decisions.
Graduate Student And Teaching Assistant
Thesis: Fluvial Architecture and Paleohydraulics of the Fond du Lac FormationThe Proterozoic Fond du Lac Formation (FdLf), crops out along the St. Louis River and Mission Creek in Fond du Lac, Minnesota. The exposure showcases several tens of meters of fluvial stratigraphy, consisting of channel sandstone bodies, that lies within the 1.1 billion year old Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) and represents the late stages of rift filling. The purpose of my study is to utilize recent advancements in the understanding of process sedimentology and ancient fluvial architecture to develop a simplified quantitative model of the paleohydraulic conditions recorded in the FdLf. Analysis of the vertical stratographic record, lithofacies composition, and sedimentary architecture of the FdLF preserved fluvial deposits provides insight into the surficial process of the ancient river system. My research will analyze the fluvial deposits and identify subtle signatures of regional climate and tectonic process at the time of deposition and provide insight into the temporal significance of the FdLf in the context of the overall MRS evolution. During my research and studies, I was a teaching assistant for Sedimentology, Introduction to Geology and Introduction to Environmental Science. I also pursued a Stream Restoration Science and Engineering Certificate from the University of Minnesota- National Center for Earth-Surface Dynamics.
Gis Technician - Intern
I joined Barr as an Intern in May 2015. I primarily worked with ArcGIS to create figures for permits and documents that required illustration of conceptual plans. Tasks and responsibilities included gathering requested information and creating figures and diagrams for Soil Erosion and Control permits, Soil and Water Pollution Prevention Plan permits and reports, and Facility Response Plans, and Site Plan typicals. These tasks led to my proficiency in data management, data conversion, and custom report cartography. Special projects at Barr Eng. included assistance in stream restoration/mitigation projects, located on Spider Creek, Amity Creek, and Knife River Minnesota. My activity and contribution during the restoration of Spider Creek included, identification, surveying and analysis of channel patterns of the project stream and reference reach, calculations of hydraulic conditions, created field and report diagrams and gathered required information for the proposed stream mitigation plan report. During the Amity Creek and Knife River projects my role was to oversee and manage the contractor during onsite construction.
Staff Geologist
At Summit, I worked as an environmental consultant developing conceptual reclamation plans and demonstrating competency in permitting with government regulators for multiple entities, townships to counties, in west-central Wisconsin. I prepared reclamation plans for non-metallic mines, in size from 40 to 1,400 acres. Plans included, present and future land use and phasing, material volume estimations, land ownership, and potential environmental impact areas. I specifically created figures and 3D models using ArcGIS for compliance reports. Field work also included prospecting and exploring potential sand reserves, and establishing high capacity wells. Lab work included testing samples from the exploration work and samples sent from private entities for Summit’s sister company, FracTAL.
Laboratory Research Assistant
I tested silica sand and proppants in compliance to ISO 13503-2, including grain size, roundness and sphericity and crush analysis. I developed procedures for sample preparations in regards to client requests and analytical testing.
