Rebecca Key was in the ninth grade at Francis Scott Key H.S., in Carroll County, Maryland, when she decided to pursue the career of architect. Successfully obtaining a 5 year professional degree of Bachelor of Architecture, from the University of Maryland, School of Architecture in 1977, placed her among 12 women who graduated from an original freshmen class of 120. Those 5 years of intense study and determination graduated only 30 of the original 120.Shortly after graduation, Key was hired as a designer/draftsman for a Baltimore based clothing store that had its sights on growing to 120 stores nationally within a 5 year time frame. The position grew into director of Store Planning and Design, with responsibility for prototypical design, construction documents, and construction administration, throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and other major metropolitan areas in the United States.Five years later, Key resigned from Webster Clothes to open her own store planning firm, with Alex Haill in 1983. Haill’s connections with the store fixture industry and the design and manufacturing of those necessary props for retail stores, combined with Key’s planning and design of boutique stores seemed a natural fit. They continued to provide store planning services with many single entity and other regionally based retail firms. 1986 saw the introduction of Interior Design Services offered to the firm’s corporate clients. 1993 added the registration of licensed architect to Key’s credentials.Desiring a change in venue and more challenging design work, Key moved to West Virginia and secured a position with Alpha Associates, Incorporated in 2000, in Morgantown, WV. Hired as a staff architect and interior designer, she brought vast experience to the firm of working within the private sector.
