Slash Pine Press designs and constructs chapbooks through the University of Alabama. As an intern, I helped to select submissions to be published, design the chapbook covers, review the manuscripts once they had been transferred to InDesign files, and proofread the manuscripts. We assembled and stitched the chapbooks by hand. I also helped to organize and staff the Slash Pine Writers Festival, during which I participated in a reading.

My primary responsibility was to fact check the articles using the Internet, online databases, and the special collections library on the University of Alabama campus. I also edited copy for the magazine. I wrote a short post for the Intern Blog once every two weeks. I helped out with small tasks around the office as needed.

Richmond, Virginia

During this internship, I worked primarily on gathering research for the 2014 "State of Education" issue. I researched Virginia colleges and high schools online and then conducted interviews with faculty members over phone and email. I also fact-checked articles and proofread the jackets. I wrote a brief article for the magazine about vineyard dogs. I wrote copy for the magazine and sell sheets for the vendors we wished to feature in future issues.

I had a wide variety of responsibilities. My primary task was to sell tickets at the front desk, which required me to handle money, operate a cash register, take and make phone calls, and interact extensively with guests. I also worked in the information booth, answering guests' questions about the museum and the surrounding area. In addition to these jobs, I spent a great deal of time working in the museum's traveling exhibit, helping guests navigate the exhibit, answering questions, and politely reminding guests about the rules of the exhibit. During my time in this position, I also had brief experience working in the gift shop, the concessions stand, and the IMAX theater.
