As a kindergartener, I failed nap time. I often had trouble staying quiet during the mandatory mid-morning break. According to my parents, I defended my actions by explaining I just had “so much I wanted to say.” I now realize that young Rebecca was simply discovering how much she enjoys communicating with others. As a student at the University of Georgia, I studied how to convey meaning onstage through dance and converse in another language (Spanish). Through my various positions in the non-profit sector, I have listened to the needs of donors, advocated for my programs when applying for grants, and discussed research projects with local universities. In my current role in non-profit arts education, my communication skills are put to the test, whether I am coordinating program implementation in over 350 classrooms, leading trainings for schools or districts, presenting at national conferences, coaching a roster of 35 teaching artists, or consulting on EDI initiatives.Even if I was breaking the rules, my kindergarten self already knew the power and possibility of positive communication. A simple conversation can challenge me to acquire new knowledge, find joy in the unfamiliar, or approach situations with curiosity. With that in mind, please feel free to reach out if you would like to chat about non-profit work, arts education, or my beloved Georgia Bulldogs. As you’ve learned, I’m always ready to chat!
