My research follows practical-minded liberal arts tradition, focusing on communication in civic contexts, especially the relationship between language and social interaction & rhetorical culture. Experienced with ethnography of communication, with attention to U.S. local-regional contexts, with cross-cultural comparison, projects in Poland and public memory, and presidential rhetoric. Major focuses: deliberative democracy, state and local rhetoric and communication, public engagement in policy planning--especially transportation and democratic deliberation.
