My principal job duties in this position were to recruit volunteers for the annual spring "Phonathon," support volunteer training, and supervise and support our 50+ volunteers as they called over 200 high school students. In addition, I helped recruit volunteer student hosts for the Spring Sampler, during which over 2,000 high school seniors visit Macalester, and supported the Sampler as needed. I also supported the Multicultural Admissions staff with daily administrative tasks as needed.

I was a preceptor for “Latin America Through Women's Eyes” with Political Science Associate Professor Paul Dosh. In this position is shared lecturing and class facilitation responsibilities with Professor Dosh. I also held office hours, advised students on their papers and projects, and evaluated student work. Additionally, I redesigned the course's curriculum on Colombia. I also periodically gave interactive lectures on writing for an academic audience covering such subjects as writing a clear thesis statement, identifying and effectively using evidence, structuring a cogent argument, and providing and refuting counterclaims to strengthen your argument.

As Student Assistant to the Department of Multicultural Life I researched and wrote the gender and sexuality and economic justice news beats for the department’s monthly newsletter. I also attended to the front desk, answered phone calls and emails, and assisted in administrative tasks as needed. Additionally, I co-managed the Department’s Facebook account.

In this position I revised the student organization handbook and brochure. I also produced, directed, and edited a series of videos focusing on student extracurricular involvement at Macalester. The videos were posted on the Campus Programs’ website and used in off-campus presentations and conferences to evaluate the success of Campus Programs’ “Community Learning Model”. In addition, I produced, directed, and edited a series of videos focusing on consent, sexual harassment, and personal safety. These videos were shown to the entire incoming first-year class, over 500 students, during the new student orientation event “This Matters at Mac”. I also co-wrote the script for “This Matters at Mac” and participated in the event as an emcee.

As a First Year Course Writing Assistant I supported efforts by Academic Programs and former Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies Clay Steinman to help first year students develop their writing skills. I introduced these students to college level writing and worked with them as a class and one-on-one to bring their writing skills to a college level. I gave mini-lectures on academic research techniques and argumentative writing. I also evaluated student essays and worked with each student to revise and improve their work. Additionally, I held periodic study sessions on media theory and film history to make certain that students understood the content of the course “Race and Silent Film: D.W Griffith and Oscar Micheaux” well enough to write on it.

In this position I acted as event coordinator and space manger of Macalester’s common space known as the Cultural House. As an event coordinator I found participant organizations to host the Cultural House weekly event “In The Kitchen With . . .”. I then went over the guidelines of the program with participating organization and attended the weekly event to troubleshoot as necessary. I also planned “Fresh Friday: Does Net Neutrality Matter?” an event designed to educate the student body on Internet neutrality and engage students in a discussion of its merits or drawbacks. The event also prompted students to engage legislators directly via phone or email. I managed the technical needs of the annual Cultural House poetry slam and supported events planned by my co-workers. As a space manager I helped schedule events in the space, welcomed visitors to the space, and made sure visitors could find the materials they needed.
