Skills: Working with the diverse personalities of owners, coworkers, product experts, and customers to choose best materials, practices and timelines to integrate a new department within an existing business, while the business is in operation. Also, assessing and refining organizational practices, delegating different components of the project, point of sale software overhaul, and community outreach.

Keeping salesfloor and staff fresh with product, merchandising, and customer support in a family-owned outdoor retail business on the Appalachian Trail. Skills: Extensive knowledge, sales, troubleshooting, and warranty management of boots, backpacks, tents, camp stoves, water filtration, and other outdoor equipment. As a guide and shuttle driver work frequently entailed communicating pertinent place-based information about trail conditions, regulations, and logistics to out-of-town recreationists including backpackers and paddlers.

Developing trips and educational materials for K-12 students, summer campers, and adult retreats with a focus on adventure learning. Skills: Leading backcountry trips via backpacking or canoeing, rock climbing, ropes courses, environmental education, and facilitating team building. Also, group leadership and management, group meal planning and preparation, facilities maintenance, and using nature and outdoor recreation to enhance classroom curriculum and participant self-actualization.

Single handedly stocking, serving, and maintaining food and beverage in a clean, inviting, café space inside a high-end outdoor retailer. Skills: Managing, ordering, sales, customer service, merchandising, and teaching about outdoor recreation products.

Coordinating trip and course logistics for adult education in and around Glacier National Park. Skills: Teaching naturalist courses and day camps, as well as managing hospitality tasks, guiding backcountry hikes and driving 15 passenger vans. Attended the National Park Service’s seasonal interpreter training.

I was involved in every aspect of this organization from 2nd grade overnight camper to Board of Directors. Highlights: Developing a nature education program, outdoor trip and primitive residential leadership for family-style, co-ed, children groups, leading worship, documenting and publishing promotional materials, and overseeing a memory collection project for the organization’s 50th Anniversary.
