I'm an arts freelancer and professional manager with a career and experience which spans arts and business. In January 2022 I became Creative Producer and organisation lead of Hebden Bridge Arts. I also work on a freelance basis across the arts as a consultant and project manager. I have nine years experience as a manager in independent cinema, covering all bases of cinema exhibition operations, and am on the board of directors a community cinema and arts centre. Additionally I have a creative practice, working in various media including ceramics and print-making. I studied Law at Cambridge University (St John's College) and completed my Legal Practice Course in Oxford. In 2003 I completed my 2 year solicitor training contract at Walker Morris in Leeds, and from 2003 to 2010 I practised as a Solicitor specialising in Commercial Property Law in West and North Yorkshire. Between 2009 and 2011 I studied part-time at University of Leeds for a Masters degree in 'Culture, Creativity & Entrepreneurship', graduating in 2011. In 2010, I gave up Law, working first at Square Chapel Centre for the Arts in Halifax, and then as Manager of Hebden Bridge Picture House until 2021. In that time I grew audiences, developed the cinema's programme, project managed refurbishment of the entire front of house areas, and ensured the cinema kept trading after a devastating flood which affected almost all areas of the building in 2015, and more recently recovered the business and the building from further flooding in February 2020. During the Covid-19 pandemic I was successful in obtaining five grants, procured and customised a new box office system, run a staff training programme and curated / co-ordinated a year-long centenary programme of events and projects. From 2022 my main work has been as Creative Producer of (and since 2023 Project Manager for) Hebden Bridge Arts, fundraising for and delivering large-scale projects which bring communities and inspiring artists together to create exciting art on the theme of the environment and climate emergency, offering an accessible artistic programme that spans the visual arts, written and spoken word, theatre, dance and music. I'm highly motivated, goal focused, business minded and pride myself on being organised and dependable. I thrive on detail and enjoy managing complex projects, something my legal career provided lots of opportunity for. I'm creative, enthusiastic, personable and above all believe in giving each role I take on my absolute best effort. I am always learning.

Cinema ManagerHebden Bridge Picture House Nov 2012 - Nov 2021Hebden Bridge Picture HouseResponsible for the management of the independent Picture House cinema in Hebden Bridge, which transferred to Hebden Royd Town Council ownership in April 2012, and gained digital projection facilities on July 2012. The cinema is run on a not for profit basis but has no grant or regular council funding and so must operate as a successful business. The Picture House is available for hire (commercially & by the community), with hirers bringing live events such as comedy nights & music acts to the mix.My role is the management of the cinema in terms of the experience of the audience at films, live broadcasts and live events, maintaining a fantastic team of 26 front of house and behind the scenes employees, looking after the wonderful 1920s listed building and, of course, ensuring the Picture House continues to be a profitable business and remains at the heart of the local community. I am also responsible for the maintenance of the grade II listed building, facilities, health and safety and meeting licensing conditions. In November 2018 the Picture House was Highly Commended in the Screen Awards in the category of Cinema of the Year (24 screens or under). Development Assistant & Volunteer Co-OrdinatorSquare Chapel Arts Centre Jul 2010 - May 2012I enjoyed a pleasantly varied and interesting role, which contributed to the internal running of Square Chapel and also its external presence in Halifax and Calderdale. As Development Assistant I constantly sought out opportunities to (a) raise awareness of all the wonderful things Square Chapel does amongst members of the local community and businesses based in the region, and (b) to raise money through sponsorship, charitable giving, and the Friends and Corporate Friends schemes in order to support the great range of activities and events organised by Square Chapel. As Volunteer Co-ordinator, I was responsible for the recruitment, training, retention and well-being of the 130-140 strong team of volunteers whose roles included helping at events and providing garden maintenance and administrative and technical support. I also organised shifts and rotas amongst the 120 or so volunteers that helped out at events and performances by ushering / stewarding, running the bar, and serving teas and coffees. I met fantastic people from all walks of life who all had their own reasons for giving up their time and energy to support an institution that they love. -
