About Richard Cook

The connection between nanomaterials and the macroscopic world are a direct element of both my interest and my experience. Through my work experience, I have been able to expand my fundamental knowledge which in turn I have applied to practical real-world problems. The coupling of theory with industrial relevant problem solving has allowed me to provide innovative solutions. My training in Lean Six-Sigma (black belt) and Kepner-Tregoe Problem and Decision Analysis used in a multitude of projects from Root Cause analysis to Design of Experiments has widened the types of problems I can successfully solve.Along with the research science side, I have greatly expanded my business skills.     My group is responsible for supporting, improving and developing the nonmetallic portfolio within Praxair Surface Technology. The chemistries include cermet materials such as WC/Co/Cr, WCNi, and CrCNiCr, thermal barrier coatings (TBC) materials (e.g. ZrO2, Yttria, and YTZ), environmental barrier coatings (EBC) materials (rare earth silicates), CrOx, Slurry coatings, EBPVD Ingots and PLP solutions. My group also works closely with Operations to improve productivity (Six Sigma) and introduce improved equipment (technology). We also support OpX and LEAN manufacturing initiatives. We are also responsible for the development of new custom materials for supporting our customers' needs, be it a small change in a PSD or other physical property to a brand new chemistry or application.
