     A Northrop Grumman’s research project to design an Unmanned Aerial System which increases the endurance of the UAV, by detecting updrafts/thermal columns in the atmosphere using temperature sensors. In MATLAB and Simulink, modeled the flight control system of the UAV, constructed an atmospheric model, developed the thermal soaring algorithm and performed 6 DOF simulation to test the thermal soaring strategy. Developed the UAS by selecting Data Acquisition board & Autopilot with 8 bit Atmel microcontroller, researching various temperature sensors, evaluating the sensors by performing wind tunnel tests and integrating the sensors with the Data Acquisition board. Studied of USB/I2C/UART interfaces to establish communication between autopilot and data acquisition board. Used Embedded C programming to develop thermal detection algorithm to sense and identify thermals based on atmospheric temperature data recorded by sensors (mounted on wing). Used Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) protocols to write navigation and guidance algorithm which enables the UAV to fly in an autonomous soaring (search pattern) mode to detect thermals and utilize the wind updrafts within thermal to increase its altitude. Performed HIL simulation testing using Flight Gear Flight Simulator to validate the UAS design.
