The interview I nailed—after pounding the pavement for months. On a hot summer day in Detroit, I pulled up behind the strip mall to the address Luster Lewis gave me and found a large man in a Harley Davidson Edition Ford F-150 with the windows down looking right at me. I got out of my rusty Nissan Pathfinder and looked back at him. He said, "Are you Sam?" I said, "Yeah." He said, "Get in." I got in the truck and we drove away. While we were driving Luster handed me a portable DVD player and said, "Check out these digital business cards." I looked. "These are the future of business. You are going to be selling these things at conferences and trade shows.” He looked at my shoes, “You’ll need some new shoes first."When we got to Luster’s house he introduced me to his wife. She was nice and offered to make me a sandwich. Mouths full, we talked about what we'd do with our first million dollars. Luster was going to buy a jet. His wife was going to go on vacation. I was going to pay rent. “Sam, you kill me,” Luster said. I was serious.Luster knew a lot of people in town including the print shop owner. We entered the shop through a side door. Luster told the man he'd need 500 business cards. "Yo, Sam. What you want your title to be?" My what? I didn't know I got the job. I looked at Luster then at the shop owner. Luster said, "How about Head of Marketing. No. Global Head of Marketing." I said, "Yeah, that sounds nice." After Luster placed the order we finally went to his office.The office was spacious. We sat down at his desk which was near a sound booth and recording equipment, and a box of ballroom dancing instructional DVDs. Luster leaned in close, "Here are the big ideas I've got going on. Be cool. They're just works in progress." Idea number one was to pitch our production services to car insurance companies, because they need higher quality court videos for their cases. As he talked Luster licked stamps and stuck them on handwritten letters to insurance companies. Idea number two was to sell ballroom dancing instructional DVDs at liquor stores. "Because at night when you're standing in line to buy liquor this shit is going to look hot." He said. I looked down at the box of DVDs. I believed him.Eventually Luster had to go home and the interview was over. He dropped me off at my rusty Nissan and told me I would start Monday. "Don't stay out too late this weekend, Sam. You got a job now." he said. I stood there, confused, but excited. Global Head of Marketing. Nice.
