G-Research researches investment ideas to predict price movements in financial markets across multiple asset classes. We also develop the research and execution platform to deploy these strategies globally.I started my year in industry at G Research at the beginning of June 2014. Initially I was working in IT Support however moved to Network Operations where my true passions lie.The IT Support team monitor and maintain the global IT infrastructure used to trade high-performance quantitative investment strategies in global financial markets.In NetOps I was responsible for the day to day running operations of the global network. Scheduling maintenance along with costing out/in BGP links so as not to clash with trading.I also gained experience in configuring Nexus 7k's as well as fibre channel zoning.

During, in essence, my last summer holidays, I decided to take it upon myself to find some work experience to fill my time.Within a few days of starting I was answering 1st line technical support calls and resolving issues there, and then over the phone.I used a remote desktop client to gain access to the users' device or domain server.Whilst there I became more confident in the use of; Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, Citrix, Backup Monitoring, Server Maintenance and Hardware fault diagnostics.

I.T Technical SupportMy time spent at the Basildon Campus was for work experience.Whilst on work experience I was given the opportunity to witness computing in the “real” world.I worked with the support team for a week and whilst there I was taught the ropes of what is involved in maintaining a college network.I was shown how to Telnet into routers; configure users; service computers (including Apple Mac's); configure email clients, remote accessing; and how to log, track, and process fault reports that where incoming to the support team.
