During one of my first engineering internships, I had a manager who gave me two pieces of advice. The first was to learn as much about computers as I could. The second was to take as many business classes as possible, and I took his words to heart. I have built my skills, education, and work experience around these words of wisdom and love what I am capable of doing now. I began by taking computer science courses as all of my electives during my Mechanical Engineering degree, learning about object-oriented programming in languages like Java and C. After, I enrolled in an After Degree for Operations Management to develop skills in forecasting, data analysis, and mastering Excel/VBA for business applications.I have primarily worked in manufacturing and automation, and I enjoy these industries a lot. They allow me to apply the aforementioned skills in unique and fulfilling ways. My most notable achievement so far came when I was a Machining Intern at John Deere Drive Train Operations. I was able to create an Excel document that was capable of reading NC code from a particular type of vertical lathe, which allowed me to calculate things like tool path length and estimate tool wear over time. I used this sheet as a tool to perform cost reduction analysis and was able to create a new procedure for future cost analyses.
