As a Procurement Engineer at Greenheck I am part of the Strategic Sourcing Team, and work with all the various units of the company to ensure we are using our resources wisely. We work heavily with our vendors to make sure we are utilizing best practices/designing for excellence with respect to both their and our own manufacturing capabilities. The sourcing team leads numerous value engineering projects.

During my time at Marinette Marine I gained valuable work experience. I was exposed to the many difficulties of the ship building industry, and how to overcome those difficulties. Marinette Marine was working on the LCS (Littoral Combat Ship) for the US Navy while I was there. Some of my tasks on this internship included implementing a new codification system, inspecting parts, and ship checks among other things. One project I was involved with consisted of locating some RTDs on the ship and finding a suitable design of a protective cover for them that would suit each RTD regardless of their location on the ship.

I worked in the Air Control and Architectural Products Laboratory. My responsibilities included fabricating props, transitions, brackets, etc; which often involved interacting with shop floor employees to see when different machines would be available for me to use. I also ran various products through various tests, and wrote the reports. During my time there I took press brake and weld training, and developed many hands on skills that I had been lacking prior to the co-op. I also gained a wealth of knowledge about the HVAC industry as a whole, and what it means to be an engineer in industry.

I directed the lifeguards in their day to day duties, as well as helping them to enforce the pool rules. I also maintained the chemical levels in the swimming pool, and interacted with customers to help meet their needs/concerns. The biggest challenge and most rewarding part of this position was making sure the customers and the lifeguards were able to enjoy their experience at the Princeville Aquatic Center, while maintaining the safety of everyone on the property.

I worked as a summer custodian, which was a great experience. While it involved less desirable tasks such as taking out trash, waxing floors, cleaning desks, and some grounds keeping; it also included many lessons that can only be learned from such a position. I was able to see the power dynamics of an institution from a perspective that I'm not sure a lot of college students do. If nothing else, I gained a new found respect for anyone in a custodial position.
