I am part of the North American Breeding organization with an emphasis on analytics and lab support. In this position I manage different projects in support of our Breeding and Commercial organizations. This work is typically compositional testing of corn, soy, stover, and other forms of analyses. We have a well equipped wet lab where traditional methodology such as GC, HPLC, ICP-OES and other techniques are utilized as reference methods in development and maintenance of NIR calibrations. We also employ other imaging techniques utilized in compositional testing as well as providing on-site analysis where needed.Not only the data but expertise in test design and other factors are utilized in relationships within the industry to better align various hybrids and commercial products with end-use customers in the ethanol and food processing industries. As part of these efforts I am a board member of both the Iowa Biodiesel Board where I am also the treasurer and the Iowa Biotech Association where I am also vice chair.

Lead manufacturing analytical lab in support of Roundup manufacturing.

In this position I performed a variety of analytical techniques in support of glyphosate (Roundup) research and manufacturing efforts. Instrumentation included HPLC, IC, GC, UV/Vis, ICP/OES, ICP/MS, GC/MS, IC/MS/MS as well as many others. Other skills include computer validation (21 CFR Part 11), on-site support of manufacturing operations including overseas, as well as team lead responsibilities.

I was responsible for coordination of all laboratory activities including regulatory compliance to GLP of all data produced in the analytical laboratory. Management responsibilities included budgeting, personnel issues/hiring, purchasing, study directorship of all analytical projects, marketing of services, technical supervision of all chemists and analysts, etc. Additional responsibilities included the day-to-day use of a GC/MS, HPLC, and GC; development of new services such as transition of traditional gas chromatographic methodology to mass spectrometric methodology; design and implementation of new Windows NT/Access ‘95/EZChrom/MassLab/Visual Basic/Crystal Reports integrated laboratory data tracking system for increased automation and reduced paperwork; exploration of new technology such as LC/MS/MS; etc. An approximate ratio of responsibilities would be (1: 1) bench chemistry/analysis: management. It should be noted that this job ended due to destruction of the facility by an accidental fire and the subsequent decision of ownership not to reopen this division.As Analytical Chemist my responsibilities included the analytical support of various laboratory and field studies under U.S. EPA-FIFRA guidelines. All of the work was performed as the Principal Analytical Investigator. In terms of instruments this work employed the use of GC/MS ~75% of the time with ~20% being performed on HPLC and the remainder being traditional GC (FPD, ECD, NPD).

This work consisted of method development, method validation, analytical work, and report preparation of aquatic toxicity testing for purposes of registration of drugs, various pesticides, and toxic substances. Areas of GLP compliance for which we worked included U.S. EPA-FIFRA, FDA, U.S. EPA TSCA, OECD, and MAFF (Japan). Duties also included maintenance and operation of instrumentation (HPLC and GC), submission of reports to the above agencies, preparation of SOP’s, interaction with client representatives, etc.
