Reed has been interim executive director for a human services agency, a high school mentorship program, a children’s museum and a city ballet; budgets have ranged from $600,000 to $5 million. These appointments have included one turnaround, one retirement of a 25-yr founder, two organizations distressed by long periods without leadership and one encumbered by ongoing HR litigation. However complex the environment, Reed’s first principle is “don’t be surprised - and don’t create surprises.” Clients commend her judicious approach, shrewd assessments and constructive internal and external communications. Reed brings calm balance to the top of the org chart and is a valuable bridge between staff and board. Her engagements are notable not just for her ability to “keep the plane flying,” but also for raising morale and optimism about the future. Prior to joining the nonprofit sector, Reed was a management consultant in high technology. In 2005, she accepted her first nonprofit executive role, leading the turnaround of a beloved $2 million human services transportation agency in Greater Boston. Buoyed by the mission, Reed stayed on as E.D. until 2014, deepening her facility with nonprofit strategy, public policy, fundraising, and operations.A decade ago, Reed relocated to her home state of Mississippi to care for family. While there, she managed a campaign for state senate, organized voters and headed a super PAC for a gubernatorial candidate. She also led successful interim executive engagements at the Children’s Museum of Memphis and Ballet Memphis. Reed returned to Boston in 2024, where she pursues a range of projects along with interim executive work, most recently for the ACE Mentor Program of Greater Boston.
