While at The Trade Desk I worked on developing a safe interface through which developers could interact with Kafka clusters, and those in charge of the clusters could maintain them. To create this interface I used the DropWizard framework in Java to implement a RESTful API. I worked mostly independently on this API, as I was not on a team and as such took the initiative to meet with subject-matter experts who had used Kafka and other technologies I was hoping to integrate into the API.

At Transport Canada I was primarily responsible for managing a critical new data set we were to receive from the major Canadian rail carriers, describing in detail the rail movement of all goods across Canada. This involved conducting exploratory data analysis to ensure the data was veracious, valid, and complied with the requirements set out in the bill. I also set up a SQL server database to house the data and an accompanying script in R to automate loading and validation so non-technical staff could quickly load each data set.In addition to my work for the rail data, I took the initiative to prepare and deliver small lectures to my co-workers to teach them the fundamentals of programming as the majority of them didn't have any programming background and were beginning to rely more and more on R for their analysis.I also performed ad-hoc analysis to communicate the impact of an impending trucker strike and the capacity of rail to carriers to accommodate freight that would normally be shipped by truck.

While on the Big Data Innovation Team I created visuals displaying the impact of a major transit pilot project using data tracking the movement of vehicles through downtown Toronto. I was responsible for creating baseline metrics. This involved validating data from before the project was implemented and finding meaningful ways to display it alongside the live data. I created a simple tool in Python to visualize all the aggregate points to be used in the baseline to complete the process in under an hour.

Analysed GRT GTFS transit data to build a framework to optimise locations for electronic charging stations were the GRT fleet to incorporate electric busses using Python.

At Linamar I assisted the materials manager in updating a severely underperforming plant's inventory policy. I took the initiative to automate the creation of Kanban cards using Microsoft Word and VBA, and also conducted an analysis on a list of tools that had been broken during production look for valuable insights and patterns to prevent the assembly line from failing due to excessive tool failure

My primary responsibility at the Biosphere Association was to run astronomy programs five nights a week. This involved conducting research on an interesting and relevant topic in astronomy, then preparing and delivering a talk on that topic to a public audience. I also operated a telescope and engaged patrons by explaining what they were seeing and how to best observe it. I also advertised the program by delivering an interview for a local radio station and writing biweekly articles for a local newspaper.I also managed data collection and analysis on stream levels and flow rates, installing an automated water level logger, taking stream rate measurements and creating a model to interpolate stream flow based on the water level.Other operations I helped with were installing solar-powered cattle watering systems for farmers and helping extirpate an invasive species from sensitive wetland ecosystems.

As the program manager of Bayside Astronomy, I was responsible for developing and delivering astronomy talks five nights a week during the summer, as well as advertising for the program.During the off season I helped fundraise for an annual fundraiser, contacting the CEO of companies with strong environmental philanthropic policies to secure donations to offset the costs of the fundraiser.On a given week, I conducted research on an interesting and relevant topic in astronomy, then preparing and delivering a talk on that topic to a public audience. I also operated a telescope and engaged patrons by explaining what they were seeing and how to best observe it.
