From my early days as the first Black American valedictorian of Georgetown High School to my advanced studies at the University of South Carolina, my passion for education and STEM has been the driving force behind my journey. My dissertation explored the intricate world of genetics and breast cancer health disparities, but it also illuminated the transformative power of transdisciplinary curriculum. As the Owner & Principal of Verbalizing Visions, LLC, I've championed culturally-sustaining STEM pedagogies, especially within Gullah/Geechee communities. This commitment extends to my roles in academia, where, whether at Voorhees University or the University of South Carolina College of Education, I've strived to mold the next generation of educators and curriculum specialists. My consultancy with SC TEACHER further amplifies this mission, focusing on enhancing South Carolina’s educator workforce research. These roles, diverse yet interconnected, reflect my unwavering belief in the power of education to drive socioeconomic justice, especially through STEM literacy. As I continue my journey, especially in my most recent appointment as the 2023-24 South Carolina Educational Policy Fellow, my aspirations have taken on a renewed vigor. Collaborating with diverse community members, advocates, and partners, I envision a future where STEM and transdisciplinary education prepares individuals to drive initiatives that promote clean and sustainable energy, ensure access to clean water and sanitation, combat the adverse effects of climate change, eradicate hunger through sustainable agricultural practices, and champion good health and well-being for all. These objectives not only address the immediate challenges of our time but also lay the foundation for a sustainable and equitable future. My overarching goal is to influence the very policies, practices, and spaces where transformative education unfolds, ensuring they resonate with inclusivity, effectiveness, and foresight.
