Profile bio

About Reginald Edwards

I am a PhD candidate at UNC-Chapel Hill and a recipient of the prestigious NIH-NRSA Predoctoral (F31) fellowship. My current project, under the supervision of Dr. Paul Manis, aims to understand the effect of noise-induced hearing loss on auditory neuron morphology and physiology by utilizing using electrophysiology, auditory brainstem response assays, immunofluorescence, and confocal imaging techniques. This innovative and impactful research has the potential to advance the field of auditory neuroscience and inform potential therapeutic strategies for patients with hearing impairments.I have also worked in multiple other neuroscience labs, and posses a wide arrange of scientific skills (Primary cell culture, biochemical assays, gene therapy assays, etc). My research experiences have lead to two review articles and two research papers in high-impact journals, securing two independent predoctoral grants, and achieving awards at local and national conferences. I am eager to apply my skills and knowledge to government or industry research settings, where I can collaborate with diverse and interdisciplinary teams to address complex and challenging problems.Outside the lab, I enjoy traveling the world, making creative meals, and engaging in the art community.

Reginald Edwards work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Graduate Student Researcher

I am currently working in the lab of Dr.Paul Manis. My thesis work aims to understand the effect of noise-induced hearing loss on auditory neuron morphology and physiology. I will be utilizing electrophysiology, auditory brainstem response assays, immunofluorescence, and confocal imaging to elucidate the effect noise exposure has on the firing properties of select auditory neurons in mice. This work will give critical insights into mechanistic changes in human patients with noise induced hearing loss, and could lay foundation for better cochlear implant development.

Graduate Student Researcher

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

My thesis work initiated under the supervision of Dr. Damaris Lorenzo. My thesis project in the Lorenzo lab was understanding the role of cytoskeletal protein ßII-spectrin in cerebellar connectivity and function. I used various biochemical assays, histology, and advanced microscopy techniques to elucidate the effects of ßII-spectrin in murine models. We have discovered human mutations in ßII-spectrin in 33 human patients, with many of the patients experiencing intellectual disability, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Seizures; all of which are seen in the cerebellar mouse model I investigated.

Aug 2019 - Jul 2022

Post-Baccalaureate Prep Scholar

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

As a PREP scholar, I worked under the guidance of Dr. Mohanish Deshmukh investigating mitochondrial biogenesis after mitochondrial damage in primary neurons. I was able to utilize advanced time-lapse imaging techniques to look at the movement of GFP-tagged mitochondria throughout the axon of neurons.

May 2018 - Jul 2019

Research Technician

Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States

I conducted research at the UNC Gene Therapy Center under the guidance of Dr. Steven Gray. . I specifically worked under Dr. Rachel Bailey, pushing for clinical applications of AAV in relation to giant axonal neuropathy (GAN) through the gene transfer of the GAN gene throughout the peripheral nervous system. I gained experience in animal dissections and histology preparation.

Oct 2017 - May 2018

Biological Technician

Columbia, Missouri, United States

As part of the USDA-Agricultural Research Services, I worked under Dr. Bruce Hibbard and the team at the Biological Control of Insects Research Laboratory (BCRIL). I studied and aided in the understanding of maize resistance from the western corn rootworm beetle by utilizing transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis maize. I was capable of completing delicate gut dissections on western corn footwork beetle larvae to look at gut contents.

Sep 2016 - Aug 2017

Undergraduate Research Fellow

Columbia, Missouri, United States

I worked in the lab of Dr. Michael Garcia, understanding the role of neurofilament medium in defining internode length, axonal diameter, and myelin thickness. This knowledge was applicable to various neurodegenerative diseases like Charcot-Marie Tooth, and Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy. I was trained to successfully tease apart axons from nerve bundles under a microscope. I also used TEM imaging to look at myelin thickness of individual axons.
