I design and maintain the scanamo library (https://github.com/scanamo/scanamo), a purely functional library built in Scala to interact with DynamoDB.

I am the tech lead for the Content API team, responsible for maintaining and evolving the Guardian's Content API, an open REST API (see https://open-platform.theguardian.com) that delivers all the content produced at the Guardian to the website (https://www.theguardian.com), the Guardian App for iOS and Android (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ng-interactive/2018/may/15/the-guardian-app), the Kindle edition, the Daily Edition as well as thousands of developers worldwide.Part of my job is to find ways to save money and optimise service performance. Recently, I lead the migration of our Elasticsearch cluster and successfully moved all our content with zero downtime, yielding improved performance for several key API endpoints. In the process, I optimised network traffic to yield substantial savings in our data transfer costs.I teach beginner and intermediate-level functional programming courses in Scala and Haskell to developers in the department; I organise workshops, notably around the ZIO library in Scala, to train developers at using advanced techniques for writing correct and efficient concurrent programs. I also speak at our internal developer conference on topics I fancy like better techniques for front-end development (comonads, optics and the incremental lambda calculus).

As a core member of the Journalism Dev team, I helped build the infrastructure around atoms, self-contained pieces of content that have their own, created a cross-platform rendering library that substantially decreased the amount of duplication and increased the team's productivity.In addition to maintaining the services around the Guardian's Content API and ensuring GDPR compliance, I delivered the podcast audio experience on the website, explored new forms of online storytelling (data visualisations and data comics) and invited experts in the field to come and brainstorm ideas on those topics.
