Hired to convert local servers to Amazon cloud computing. Set up and deployed Amazon EC2 instances for Linux and Windows. Managed AWS account, including cost-savings measures, reserved instances, consolidation of servers, and setting up IAM (Identity Access Management) controls. Deployed customer relationship management (CRM) solutions as well as mobile applications for CRM solutions. Installed databases (Oracle and MySQL) and web application servers (Apache Tomcat). Set up virtual machines using VMware and Parallels software. Administered all networking and firewalls, locally as well as within Amazon Web Services. Continuously monitored hardware usage, which led to consolidation and cost savings. Provided 24x7 support for infrastructure. Wrote documentation for routine administration tasks, both of our infrastructure, and for our software product. Set up failover for critical systems., including a MySQL Slave server, and scripting to automatically failover to backup in a different AWS zone. Set up automated system to start new server instances within AWS for customer trials when a demonstration request was received via web form. Advised development team on security best practices. Setup, deployed and managed first source code control system for company. Set up, managed and maintained redmine for project management and helpdesk activities. Provided some basic instruction as to source code control goals and best practices. Traveled to customers to provide implementation support and pre-sales engineering. Provided tier 2 customer support for our product. Performed usability and functionality testing for our product on iOS and Android using emulators and real devices. System administrator and manager of team for wildly heterogeneous lab. Supported global team of software developers and customer support personnel. Responsible for lab which contained approximately 600 computers and the team of system and database administrators which managed them. The lab contained 18 different UNIXes, including, but not limited to, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, and Linux, as well as Windows, VMS, AS/400, MacOS, and even OS/2. Responsible for a variety of large projects, including folding in the lab equipment of several acquisitions, major retooling of network design, and defining and implementing a business continuity (disaster recovery) plan. Solely responsible for the budgeting and purchasing of new servers plus items to support the servers (power, data, etc.) Learned on the job - began as a UNIX system administrator knowing two UNIXes and grew into the position - learning all the other operating systems, then learning how to manage a quickly growing lab and team to support the lab. Provided routine maintenance of systems, adding users, automating processes, installing software such as compilers and java development kits, monitoring backups (Veritas NetBackup), etc. Installed new systems and boards, including beta hardware from vendors.

Us

Began as a chemist in herbicide discovery. Patented some compounds for novel use as herbicides. Became responsible for existing NMR spectrometer. Transitioned to a full time NMR spectroscopist who ran complex experiments for chemists and maintained spectrometer and its attendant equipment. Purchased new NMR and oversaw facilities project to install it. Added in responsibility for all Unix workstations within chemical discovery, including those used by the molecular modeling team. Networked all discovery systems together, and connected our systems with corporate infrastructure where appropriate.
