About Achim Reiz
As a research associate at Universität Rostock, I have worked on various projects related to artificial intelligence for over four years. In my Ph.D. research, I have tested and applied metrics, methods, and tools to evaluate and improve the quality and usability of ontologies and knowledge graphs.One of my main achievements is the development of NEOntometrics, a tool for measuring computational ontologies. NEOntometrics provides a comprehensive and customizable set of metrics that can guide ontology engineers and users to develop better artifacts and achieve their goals. With our Spin-Off neonto, we're bringing the research into an enterprise-ready application. We aim to provide quality management solutions for knowledge graphs and the semantic web. And educate people on the underlying technology and vocabularies on knowledge graphs. My mission is to help enterprises and organizations leverage the power and potential of ontologies and the underlying data.

Besides my doctoral studies, where I focused on ontologies, their evaluation, and evolution, I always worked on third-party-funded research:2023 - Zentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz in MV (KIMV):The transformational possibilities and challenges of AI are often overwhelming for enterprises. The KIMV helps by providing consultations, resources, and networking opportunities for researchers and businesses. Here, I mainly built AI demonstrators and wrote white papers.From 2021-2023 - KI-basierte Diagnoseassistenz für die Energieoptimierung von RLT-Anlagen (Kidira):Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) are the primary resource consumers in buildings. In the Kidira project, we developed a system that can identify inefficiencies and overconsumption based on IoT-sensor readouts. I was responsible for the data analytic and visualization part and also did a lot regarding the systems architecture.From 2019-2021 - Empowering Participatory Budgeting in the Baltic Sea Region (EmPaci):Participatory Budgeting (PB) puts a limited part of the city's budget in the (direct) responsibility of the citizens. It strengthens democracy and understanding of public processes. Here, I synthesized IT guidelines for integrating and developing PB initiatives in citizen-focused eGovernment systems.From 2019-2020 - Semantische Assistenz zur Objekterkennung in Bewegtbilder (SEMA):The fashion domain often deals with similar-looking items, which are hard to distinguish for a neural net. We developed a neuro-symbolic approach for detecting the right fashion items in the proper context in videos with the Fraunhofer IGD for an SME in Rostock. I was responsible for the symbolic part, thus connecting the classifiers and detectors meaningfully.

A winter adventure trip to the far north with a sailing boat built in 1980 to climb steep mountains with skis and ice equipment.
