This course, taught by Dr. Dipali Mukhopadhyay, considers international relations through the prisms of order and disorder. Drawing on a variety of social scientific traditions, we explore distinct perspectives (orthodox and critical, Western and non-Western) to map out the contours of war-making, diplomacy, intervention, and governance in the contemporary context. We engage these perspectives not from a purely academic vantage point but, rather, to recognize the many ways in which leaders, policymakers, and ordinary citizens approach the world from distinct points of view. In so doing, we attend to the evolution of key concepts, trends, and debates that have framed the study of international relations and consider their relevance for the practice of foreign affairs. We contend with the interplays between politics and law, rules and norms, the state and the non-state, interest and ideology, and competition and cooperation. We reflect on their implications for current questions of security, justice, equity, and the management of conflict.

The Deep Cuts Project analyzes the potential for U.S.-Russian arms control under adversarial conditions.

• This working group of experts aims to reinvigorate U.S. leadership on nuclear safety, security, and nonproliferation as countries seek to expand their nuclear energy footprint to mitigate climate change impacts. This working group will also develop an interagency roadmap for activities that would contribute to U.S. nuclear leadership with revamped programs for nuclear security, safety, and nonproliferation at the Departments of Energy, Defense, and State. We will provide new insights, innovative approaches, and expert guidance to the U.S. government.
