Cor Dam (Delft, 1935-2019) trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, decorative department. He then studied sculpture at the architecture department of the Delft Technical University, under extraordinary professor (and sculptor) Oswald Wenckebach. Cor Dam was not only a sculptor, but also a painter, draftsman and monumental artist. After his studies, he worked as a ceramist and designer at De Porceleyne Fles in Delft from 1950 to 1969. He made virtually non-figurative designs, many wavy lines, initially organic in which he said he still recognized human figures. After that period, he worked on many projects at Structuur 68 in The Hague, which made it possible for CoBrA artists to have their works produced in outspoken colors. Due to all this technical experience Dam was capable to make very experimental and technical correct artworks. This work is a good example of his great craftsmanship and outspoken aesthetic eye.He already made grand gestures then, which later became even clearer in both monumental work and late free objects. In 2004, Dam exhibited sculptures that moved between figuration and abstraction and were made up of large, robust shapes. In bronze, wood and ceramics, his sculptures are about color, structure, skin, matter with some main shapes such as triangles, rectangles, and lines.
