Na zes jaar als constructeur werkzaam geweest te zijn bij Volkerinfra heb ik binnen het bedrijf de overstap gemaakt richting betontechnologie. Dit vakgebied biedt voor mij veel meer uitdaging als het gaat om de ruimte om een vraagstuk te analyseren en rekening te houden met de verschillende eisen en wensen vanuit zowel ontwerp als uitvoering. Het werken bij een ontwerpende aannemer is hierbij zeer waardevol geweest. Als materiaaltechnoloog ben ik vanuit mijn werk bij Volker Wessels vooral gericht op betontechnologie. Verhardingsbeheersing, advies, duurzaamheid (LCA's et cetera), en innovatieve materialen zoals geopolymeren zijn gebieden waar ik momenteel actief in ben.Het is een geweldige uitdaging om de verschillende interessegebieden als materiaaltechnologie, uitvoerbaarheid, veiligheid en duurzaamheid te kunnen combineren om als team samen tot innovatieve, veronderscheidende ontwerpen te komen. Mijn passie ligt daarom bij het opdoen van kennis. Bijdragen aan innovatie. Een bijdrage leveren aan de samenleving. Een werkomgeving dat kwaliteit en bedachtzaamheid prefereert, geeft mij dan ook energie. Een omgeving waar men nadenkt alvorens iets te roepen. Waar men analyseert. Kritische vragen stelt. Waar men in een land der blinden niet tevreden is met één oog, maar men met beide ogen open écht het verschil wil maken.

As a structural engineer at a contractor specialized in Design & Build contracts I am able to enjoy working on various challenging projects as part of a multidisciplinary team. Our company specializes in medium to large infrastructural projects issued by governments and large companies, combining the need for creativity and innovation with the necessity of providing a realistic design. The involvement in both the design and construction phases provides valuable experience concerning both these stages. My responsibilities consist mainly of providing the proper calculations and references to validate the design in respect to the European building codes.

Conducted in cooperation with Deerns and Peutz.My research focused on the usage of elevators for evacuation purposes in high-rise buildings. Emphasis on the Dutch building environment, which boasts relatively modest building heights compared to international standards. The research included many niches like fire safety requirements, vertical transportation calculations and integration of human behavioural aspects. Result: the use of elevators as means of emergency egress is viable, safe and cost-effective, provided that the evacuation system is properly designed, organized and maintained. Including elevators as an integral part of full-scale building evacuation becomes a faster and better option in buildings higher than 150 meters (>40 occupants per floor). Lower buildings can still greatly benefit from partial integration of elevators in the building evacuation plan (for instance to service a section of the building population that has mobility problems).

Master's trajectory, Delft University of Technology – Civil Engineering.The internship took place at the Architecture & Building Engineering section of Royal Haskoning's office in Rotterdam. Involvement in a number of multidisciplinary projects with varying degrees of responsibility. An extremely interesting and useful introduction to a company with lots of variety and opportunities.
