About Remi Gratacap

Aquaculture has a central role to play to feed a rapidly growing population. By 2050, the protein demand will have almost doubled, and aquaculture has the potential to supply most of it. But doubling production of finfish, shellfish, crustaceans, and seaweed in the next 30 years is a massive challenge. It will require critical thinking (sustainable and environment conscious) and impeccable execution (innovation).I am a scientist and an entrepreneur. I am passionate about Aquaculture and have been studying and in academia researching fish farming for the last 25 years. I have expertise in fish infectious diseases, immunology, genetics, molecular biology and genome engineering. Together with Stefanie Lobnig, we created Aquanzo Ltd to address the limited supply of marine protein to support the sustainable development of aquaculture. Aquanzo is developing technologies to enable farming marine protein and increase the availability of marine ingredients for the aquafeed industry, while protecting the Ocean.

    Co-Founder And Ceo
    Aquanzo Feb 2022 - Present
    Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
We created Aquanzo to address the limited supply of marine ingredients for the aquaculture industry. By decoupling marine protein production from the Ocean Ecosystem, we are able to produce marine ingredients, sustainably and at scale, improving fish and shrimp nutrition, while protecting the Ocean.
  • Deep Science Ventures
    Founder In Residence
Deep Science Ventures Jan 2021 - Feb 2022
    Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
My role is to facilitate the massive development of the aquaculture sector by creating the most innovative start-ups. Together with DSV I am identifying the major roadblocks to the sustainable expansion of Aquaculture and bringing together teams of highly motivated and talented co-founders to deliver innovative solutions to solve these bottlenecks.
  • Roslin Institute
    Postdoctoral Research Fellow
    Roslin Institute Jun 2017 - Jan 2021
    Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Senior postdoc in the Houston lab at the Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh, UK.My research focussed on understanding and exploiting genetics resistance to important Aquaculture diseases. We developed in vitro genome editing tools (CRISPR-based) for salmonid cell lines (salmon and trout) and investigated the role of specific genes in resistance to viral infections (IPNV and ISAV). We also developed tools for large scale genome editing in fish which opens up genome-wide screen assays in fish.
  • University Of Maine
    Postdoctoral Research Fellow
University Of Maine May 2010 - May 2017
    Orono, Maine, United States
Postdoc in the Wheeler lab, Molecular and Biomedical Sciences, University of Maine, USA.We pioneered the use of zebrafish to investigates mucosal infections. By developing a swimbladder model in juvenile zebrafish we studied the role of innate immunity against the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans.
  • University Of Maine
    Postdoctoral Fellow
University Of Maine Jun 2009 - May 2010
Postdoctoral fellow in Prof Ian Bricknell's lab
  • University Of Stirling
    Phd Student
University Of Stirling Sep 2004 - Apr 2009
Work on vaccine development for protecting Atlantic cod against Vibrio anguillarum infections. The problem we addressed was the development of vibriosis in vaccinated animals. We discovered a sub-serotype of V. anguillarum not identified previously and not present in the vaccine explaining field outbreaks in vaccinated animals. The vaccine developed protected the challenged cod very efficiently.
  • Fisheries Research Services
    Research Assistant
    Fisheries Research Services 2003 - 2004
Worked on the ontogeny of immune system in Atlantic Halibut
