Remo Raffaelli -Born April 11th 1948, he received his degree (Laurea) in Computer Sciences in 1973 at the University of Pisa. He had his two years post-doctoral fellowship at the IBM Grenoble Scientific Centre in 1973 first, and at CNUCE (early University of Pisa Computing Center) in 1974.He joined IBM Italy in 1975 as System Engineer first and then as Researcher at the Pisa Research Centre where he was working on several R&D projects in Networking until 1985 and in NLP till 1993.Since 1982 till 1994 he was also involved in academics activities at the University of Pisa as assistant professor in Information Processing Systems II course at the Computer Science Department till 1987, then as contract professor in Operating Systems course at the “Scuola Diretta a Fini Speciali in Informatica” at the Department of Informatics. In 1993 he was co-founder of SYNTHEMA (see company profile) and from that time he is a member of the board of directors. Since the very beginning, he leaded several NLP projects both internal and on behalf of Synthema's customers; among the most important ones: “Nuovo Thesaurus Teche” the thematic network to access the television programmes data base, on behalf of RAI; “Edilizia Urbana”, a decision support system for territorial management, on behalf of the “Emilia Romagna” regional authority; “Text Navigator” the Italian version of the IBM Text Mining prototype; “Musica Seria” for the normalization and disambiguation of the Classic Music catalog on behalf of RAI. From 1999 to 2002 he was the head of the Lexical Systems Lab. of Synthema and the scientific coordinator of all the R&D projects carried out in various funding programs (EC 5th & 7th FP, Italian MIUR, and Tuscany Regional Authority).
