About Rena D. Grossman
I currently work and play in the interstitial spaces between 1) librarianship and disability justice; and 2) land stewardship, urban agriculture, and food justice. I am a connector of people, places, and ideas, and I bring an ever present eye towards joyous accessibility. This following is under construction:With a background in publishing, academia and archives – including the opportunity to work with librarians and library vendors – in many ways I’ve gained a 360-degree view of the profession. As a service-oriented, trained librarian who flourishes in learning environments, I’m adept at teaching others and guiding colleagues to resources (much as one would do in a reference and research role). Others know they can count on me to create a space open to all points of view and that I’ll listen and guide without imposing my own values. My strong communication skills have also contributed to my success at building and leading high-performing teams and solving complex problems. In addition to my “people” skills, I’m also proficient with analyzing data, managing information and finding technical solutions. In my most recent role at a leading publisher, I was challenged with finding ways to optimize digital strategies for our catalog of academic/professional journals, articles and books.
Listed skills include Editing, Metadata, Proofreading, Content Management, and 35 others.

Senior Manager, Product Data Quality And Solutions
At a leading publisher of academic/professional journals, articles and books, my challenge was two-fold: translating the library world to corporate colleagues and finding ways to optimize metadata strategies for our catalog of work. Gaining an expertise in information technology – and being able to share that knowledge and learn from others as part of industry working groups – has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. In January 2017 I was promoted to Senior Manager with oversight of three data teams: Data Quality, Data Services and Data Solutions. One of the big wins for the Data Quality team was contributing to the successful re-launch of our Author Services application (including open access journal articles). We used library best practices to develop, gain buy-in and implement journal/article standardization, governance and cleansing strategies. As a result, I’m proud to say that my team significantly reduced user complaints and data error rates (0% for journal and <1% for article data) by creating quality compliance processes and data hygiene scorecards. Additionally, we continued to identify, implemented and assess Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) on product data compliance and customer satisfaction. I oversaw the team responsible for resolving data discrepancies, and as a result we significantly improved customer experience of e-content discovery/access (as well as our connection with librarians and library vendors) by implementing industry standards (KBART II and ONIX enhancements). The people side of my job has been another rewarding aspect. I am dedicated to my staff’s growth – while also being mindful of business outcomes. When I started, I needed to break down complex information management concepts and provide clear instruction and guidance regarding library/academic concepts. The results were impressive and it’s been rewarding to watch my team improve their confidence, productivity and quality of deliverables.
Senior Manager, Taxonomy And Metadata Services Group
When I joined the Scholastic Library as a Cataloging & Reference Services Intern, it was supposed to be a short-term role and then I’d get a public service job. However, I ended up staying through three promotions: Tagging Coordinator for Scholastic Teachers Channel (2011), Manager (2011) and Senior Manager (2015) of Taxonomy & Metadata Services Group. I enjoyed the material and found the research side of taxonomy work and systems integration tasks to be rewarding. As Tagging Coordinator my job was more managerial. I trained and supervised a 12-person team that classified and enriched more than 7,000 pieces of content (using the Drupal CMS). We also used taxonomy and thesauri best practices (as outlined by NISO).Managing the Taxonomy & Metadata Services Group, we continually sought to improve the discovery and access experience for web users. I interviewed company stakeholders, surveyed customers and reviewed site analytics – skills that are transferable to all forms of library work. We used this research to develop taxonomies, thesauri and training materials for internal librarians cataloging products. I also managed librarians and vendors; trained/taught colleagues and staff; and managed budgets. Among our successes was the implementation of the first enterprise-wide taxonomies and authority files to be used for product classification. One project of interest was assessing descriptors for all of Scholastic’s magazines. We also completed several crosswalks/mappings, classification and semantic enrichment initiatives, as well as ongoing cataloging for the bibliographic metadata databases. Of personal significance was a project to assess and recommend an enterprise software solution that combined ontology management and auto-classification. This solution was intended to provide more reliable search results, and more intuitive ways to explore content. I partnered effectively with vendors, and managed an integration proof of concept as part of an Agile team.
Cataloging And Reference Services Intern
Working in Cataloging and Reference Services, I gained hands-on reference experience by responding to staff research requests and measuring reference stats (using RefTracker). I also created catalog records (MARC), assigned Library of Congress authority terms (using SirsiDynix ILS), and added metadata to Saplings magazine archive collection to create more access points into a historic body of material not previously searchable.
Archive And Research Intern
This internship was a wonderful experience for me – and a great way to gain curating and archive experience. This non-profit wanted to find and recognize the artistic abilities of prolific artists, actors and writers – from their high school days. I reviewed 100 years of original magazines (physical and microfiche) and found works from artists including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Robert Redford. I developed and curated a digital archive of art/writing awards (using Drupal CMS), used MODS to structure metadata, and created a classification standard to describe collection (using LCSH and common LibraryThing tags). It was fascinating to identify trends of what issues were important to teens throughout the century.
Children'S Book Editor
Before I went back to school to earn my Master’s in Library and Information Science, I worked as an editor. Looking back, the projects for which I’m most proud are the three baby books that I conceptualized and designed (still available in some libraries). I also edited 30+ books and prepared 150+ books for reprint. I worked with authors throughout the entire process, from acquisition through publication and promotion. One of my biggest priorities was ensuring we consistently met tight production timelines.
Coordinator For Arts Festival
Planning and promoting an arts festival that drew 45,000 visitors (including 1,000+ musicians, artists and educational groups) was definitely a fun and exciting experience. It also gave me a chance to hone my skills with leadership, organization and logistics.
Americorps*Vista–Reach Program Coordinator - Cornell Public Service Center
During my first role out of college, I worked with Cornell and Ithaca College professors to write and implement a curriculum for an accredited course to supplement a community mentorship program. I also trained 80+ undergraduate tutors active at the Public Service Center. To support the students, I built a web-based resource library using Blackboard that included educational materials and chat spaces.
