Technology & 3D Printing Professional
I have been providing support to friends and businesses, on a referral basis only, since I started using computers seriously. This work sometimes involves resolving a problem with software I have never used or on rare occasions helping someone navigate menus by memory. I also run a Windows server domain, which includes Exchange supporting mobile devices, which is in use by a number of people, including some that run small businesses. As a testament to my dedication I am still called on to help, on occasion, with difficult issues for some of the companies I previously worked with full time. Depending on my priorities, I contract some of these support requests within a network of trusted friends that also work in the iT field. Services available include everything needed for a full internet presence (from domain name purchase to hosting DNS, web, email, as well as other services), hardware & software support for Windows/OSX/*nix workstations & servers, network installation and maintenance, and general consultation.
Director Of Information Technology
(Formerly GJP Advertising, this is a continuation of the work history found there)I was solely responsible for managing the companies iT needs from purchasing and dealing with the various SLA contracts, to supporting the users with daily issues from their workstations to the phone system. This initially consisted of a 50/50 split between Macs and PCs running the latest MS Office and Adobe CS with 8 servers with wired and wireless networking including VPN access for all 50+ users. By the end of the contract I had migrated another 25% of the staff to Macs, moved a number of servers and test systems into a virtualization environment, set up a new SQL driven accounting and finance software package. An additional NAS backup solution was put in place for the Apple file shares and Time Machine. All work and procedures were extensively documented to ensure a clear and confusion free iT environment. For the final transition I worked on a contract and part time basis for the final year.
It Director And Project Manager
I helped to start up the internet division and later managed a staff of as many as 10 people tasked with designing web sites for primarily the harbour cruise business. The work initially covered the creation and maintenance of 4 main sites and 15 smaller sites on local and remote Windows and Linux servers with extensive search engine optimization. As iT Director I designed and built the iT infrastructure such that I was able to reduce their dependence on my full-time support. This included setting up a Windows server for DHCP, DNS for local test sites, on-site spam control to supplement the hosted email servers, backup for the various local and remote servers as well as workstations, and as a file and print server. I also supported the staff for the duration of my employment not only with work issues that would arise but also with any personal technical issues. All workstation software packages such as MS Office and Adobe CS were continually kept up to date. Server software packages included PHP, MySQL, PHPMyAdmin, Apache, Perl, MS SQL, ASP, and Java to name a few.As Project Manager I led by example in the design and coding of a web based CRM and job management package as well as many other small packages. My other duties would also include coding and graphics review for their many sites. I also set up a small number of virtual environments for the testing the work on various operating systems and browsers. I finished by hiring dedicated staff once the work started to flourish in each area.
Director Of Information Technology
I was initially brought in on contract with the task of auditing and rebuilding the IT department from the ground up. Some of the larger items addressed and resolved were full and proper backups, reduction of the physical servers from 18 to 8, cleanup of the BlackBerry server, consolidation of users multiple network passwords into a single Active Directory sign-on, wired network stabilized and speed increased 10x, wireless network consolidated and coverage increased 3x, seamless VPN access for Macs and PCs, and a significant reduction of monthly costs. Other ongoing items included the creation and updating of a disaster recovery plan, monitoring and updating the overall security of servers and the network, implementing and keeping an issue and asset tracking system up to date, implementation and monitoring of spam control for the Exchange server. At the end of January 2010 I was brought on full time to continue the work in a more focused manner and find opportunities for further improvement.
Primary System Administrator
When I took on the IT position I immediately installed help desk and inventory management software as well as streamlining the layout of the IT department. I performed about 95% of the IT work for a company of 60 people with my manager helping on the rare occasion when load dictated. I worked with approximately 20 Windows 2003 servers in an AD network using Exchange 2003, Linux Asterix server, Cisco IP phone system, HP ProCurve switch, and multiple brands of wireless access points and remote switches. I supported primarily Windows users with a number of OSX users. Hardware included desktops, tablets, laptops, as well as mobile phones connected to the Exchange server.
Quality Assurance Lead
I started at work in the QA department and quickly earned the QA lead position, managing between 3 and 6 QA testers. I interacted with production and 5 other team leads, as well as individual team members, to ensure our projects met and exceeded our team's quality standards. Near the end of a project cycle my team would be responsible for helping projects meet the strict technical certification requirements of Sony and Microsoft. The processes and software used included but was not limited to scrum, Jira, Perforce, MS Excel and Access and MS batch file scripting.
Support Technician
I was responsible for monitoring live horse racing streams from across the globe which we then provided to hundreds of sanctioned betting facilities such as Greenwood Raceway. It consisted of 15 servers connected to 4 screens with 9 video streams per screen monitored for up to 10 hours per shift. In the rare event of any failure I would resolve the issue and document the solution, usually before I received a support call. I also helped to refine the procedures for monitoring and reporting. While monitoring, I would also provide telephone support for the DSL service that the company provided to hundreds of franchised Harvey's and KFC restaurants throughout Ontario.
Head Of Game Technology
CCC was the national organizer for the Canadian division of the World Cyber Games. I directed the implementation of the gaming network and configuration of the client and server machines for all the World Cyber Games events across Canada. I met with many of the game development and gaming hardware companies around Canada to secure sponsorship and showcase products. As the technical consultant and team captain for Cyber Team Canada, Canada's National PC gaming team, I traveled to the World Cyber Game Challenge in 2000 hosted by Samsung in South Korea. The system administrators there were struggling and I offered to help which resulted in me being asked to take over administration of the network and over 300 computers for the whole tournament. They were so pleased with my support that in 2001 Samsung flew me back to South Korea to oversee the deployment of the next event.
Associate System Administrator
In the Toronto office, I took over the duties of a staff of three with responsibilities from server administration to client desktop support in a Mac and PC environment with a staff of approximately 40. I played a major role in hardware and software account management with major companies such as Softchoice, AT&T, Dell, Canon, and Microsoft.
Senior Technician
At Carbon I worked on mainly Apple computers while I supported and helped drive PC sales and service. Duties included providing Apple Care hardware support, management & maintainence the internal network, on-site & depot technical support for hardware & software issues, and on-site network set up and maintenance for both Macs and PCs in both large and small offices.
Primary System Administrator
I joined Branch Media as the head of the technical department and dealt with all their customers' technical issues. I was subcontracted to DCC Dentsu, a major advertising firm consisting of approximately 50 people, as the sole support person for their Mac and PC needs. This included network and server optimization & maintenance, client system issues & maintenance, regular back-ups, and other day-to-day issues. I also supported their many clients throughout the greater Toronto area.
Aggressive In-Line Skate Instructor & Performer
I helped in-line skaters, young and old, learn to skate on ramps and push their abilities. I would organize a large skate in the summer every year in downtown Toronto. I performed at a number of events across Canada with other members of the Planet Skate in-line skating team including but not limited to the following...• YTV – Summer event across Canada promoting YTV and summer activities.• Nike – One day Toronto event at various locations in downtown Toronto using a specially marked TTC bus.• Pepsi – Commercial• Footlocker – Commercial
Aggresive In-Line Skate Performer
I travelled around North America on multi-month tours, setting up and maintaining a 12 foot half-pipe, and performing in aggressive sport shows. I was generally the primary or one of up to three in-line skaters for the shows, some of which also included BMX and skateboarding. I have had the pleasure of performing at major events such as the CNE, PNE, and the Calgary stampede as well as similar events in the U.S.A., as far south as Florida.
