Hello, and thank you for taking the time to find out who I am. My name is Renden Peery (he & his pronouns); I am a husband and father and until recently a 13R - Field Artillery FireFinder Radar Operator for the U.S. Army. This past March, I finished my initial contract in the service and decided I'd complete my bachelor’s degree. What started as a business degree dawned from practicality turned into an aeronautics degree with the desire to fly or at the very least be the eyes in the sky. Similarly, in the Army, I had my eyes on search sectors in the sky quite often. I worked on systems such as the Q-53, Q-36, Q-50, and the Q-37 replaced by the 53. While working on the systems, I tracked, detected, and verified missiles, rockets, artillery, and mortars—finding the points of origin and their points of impact. I became the subject matter expert for my section. Troubleshooting both the system and software to ensure we were always successful in completing the mission. I was the Senior Radar Operator, and at times, Section Chief, given a team of 4-5 Radar Operators. I helped my team, training them on the three systems and helping them operate the radars accurately and how to problem solve correctly, understanding target acquisitions, detection identification, and the given location of a target with the use of WLR (weapon locating radar). Presently, I am attending Kent State University, soon to complete a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics and Aeronautics Engineering with a concentration as a Professional Pilot with minors in both Aviation Management, and Law & Policy. I earned my associates this past August, and like so many, have been displaced by the pandemic. Many Universities like KSU had temporarily suspended in-person classes such as flight classes. It presented a pickle for the University, a bottleneck of holdovers from a semester prior, along with a newer class. Not only were there not enough planes but there were also not enough trainers. Brian Neff, the Assistant Dean of Flight & Operations at KSU, advised that students who could get their private pilot's license elsewhere may need to. With flight hours being the one thing standing in the way on my BAS as a Professional Pilot, it only makes sense to get my private pilot license in my spare time and get back into the industry.
