About René Hunter
T’was a dark and stormy night in 2001 when I began making coffee professionally. To be honest, I use the term “professionally” rather loosely. To be completely honest, it was neither dark nor stormy. I thought it looked like fun to make those fluffy drinks, I knew it was fun to drink them and I sure did love hanging out in coffee shops so, why not? Looking back those first drinks of mine were terrible but the coffee seed (or cherry) had been planted. Awash in a sea of bone-dry 20-ounce cappuccinos, my burrs still sticky with the remnants of a recently ground bag of English toffee coffee I set forth to get myself a real-life coffee education.Flash forward to today where I have had the great fortune to meet, work with and learn from some of the most inspiring people in or out of the coffee industry. I’ve even managed to pick up a few things along the way. My experience includes:customer service, staff management, scheduling, training, educating, cupping and scoring coffees, equipment maintenance, event planning, marketing, inventory control, cash reconciliation, P&L reporting, safety & sanitation standards.Perhaps it’s best we discuss this further in person, preferably over a cup of coffee of course, because what I’m proudest of can’t be boiled down to a few buzzwords. It’s in the excitement of a new barista pulling their first perfect shot of espresso, pouring their first heart in a latte, that moment someone realizes coffees can taste wildly different from one to the next, finding a bean the person who “doesn’t really like coffee” absolutely loves, now we’re talking. At the heart of it, I strive to inspire people to something better.
