Renee like so many people was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer almost completely out of the blue only a few months before her 26th birthday. After suffering a month of extreme agony and stomach pains it finally became too much. She was too frustrated at a lack of clarity from her doctors that she checked herself into Emergency. It was at this point that the dire nature of her cancer became evident. The surgeon immediately wanted to operate, so under 48 hours Renee had gone from stomach pains to potentially a 50/50 chance of survival and the doctors having no real idea how big the tumor was. After a successful operation to remove a cancerous tumor from her large bowel that was nearly ⅓ of the entire bowel length. Renee then underwent 3 months of intensive chemotherapy. It's safe to say that this event was absolutely transformational for her life and in some ways an entirely new fresh beginning. Having been given the diagnosis of being cancer free in October 2019 Renee like so many other cancer sufferers now live with a cloud over their heads. Will this next check-up mean that the cancer has returned and have to go back to treatment again? Renee has now made it her mission to advocate and support other young people navigating through this disease. Renee is embarking on becoming a qualified Psychologist/Social worker specialising in young cancer sufferers, she is passionate about mental health advocacy for young people and overall improving the quality of life for cancer patients, not just here in Queensland but across Australia. Renee is involved in many not-for-profits focused on these areas.
