Animal Control Officer
Working in a public safety capacity through a global pandemic has been an ever-changing experience. Our department serves three diverse communities across a broad socio-economic spread. While we continue to adapt, I am proud that our department's model has changed from strictly financially punitive to a more flexible model. These changes have allowed families to stay together while reducing the strain on our finite resources. Providing limited community medicine options has also increased our ability to help rather than hurt our community. Most of all, recognizing that needless fines put barriers between us and the community has helped us reach those who may benefit most from what help we can offer. Our department continues to evaluate means of improving our community image and increasing our capacity for care. We retain our ability to impose financial penalties but rely on that less and less. This community focus has people calling us before minor problems escalate to the level of cruelty. These early interventions enable us to address concerns with education rather than legal actions.
Animal Control Officer And Animal Inspector
Adding to my existing animal control officer experience, this position reported through the Police Department. This afforded me the opportunity to become familiar with Computer Assisted Dispatching programs (IMC) and radio communications. Adding the Animal Inspector role to this position increased my familiarity and responsibility with the State's rabies protocol. The Animal Inspector is responsible for placing animals with potential exposures to rabies under appropriate quarantines and following up to ensure those animals do not pose a public health hazard. Further, the Inspector conducts annual barn inspections to ensure the health and safety of local livestock.

Documenting any behavioral or medical issues and working with our trainer and medical staff to address these issues.

My brief tenure in this position resulted from the department I was supporting being purchased by a different company when I was already looking for a career change. While this position came with a title change, it was equivalent to the Process Control Engineer role I had previously been fulfilling.
