On that trip I learned some good stuff like 1) a journal is fun to write and can be a wonderful source of entertainment years later, 2) while singing “God Bless America” on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial may make your elders shed a sentimental tear or two, singing it in the ugly turquoise station wagon mile after mile isn't so endearing, 3) my father and I shared a deep and inspiring love of representative government. More than a few years later, I’ve been fortunate to find a career that blends the joy of writing with that early love of representative government. TVW is WA's national award-winning public affairs network, providing unedited access to the work of the Washington State Legislature, Supreme Court, Executive Branch, state boards and commissions, elections, and public policy events of statewide significance. I started my career as a journalist, got bit by the political bug and, before I knew it, was serving in the State House of Representatives. After that, I spent some time managing relationships with elected officials and community thought leaders around education policy for a little tech company that makes iPhones, iPads, and other cool stuff, and I was lucky enough to lead the Northwest Regional Office of the U.S. Chamber. And, every once in awhile, I still get to sing "God Bless America" at baseball games. Yep, Dad would like this.
