I'm building a long-term research group in the field of design. I contribute to the doctoral education of PhD candidates in Design (which at LiU is a cross-departmental topic for doctoral education). I am/have been an advisor for several PhD candidates, covering topics on circular packaging design, design for sustainable behaviour retention, computer aided ideation, prototyping.On the undergraduate and master level of our Design and Product Development program, I'm predominantly involved in thesis projects. JDR publishes 4 issues a year, on all aspects of design research, and covering amongst other fields product design, architecture and urban planning.

Chairing a bi-annual jury of ~20 packaging professionals selecting the winner of the NVC Gouden Noot for best packaging innovation. Chaired the 2018, 2020 and 2022 juries.

LiU is one of the universities participating in the Sugar Network.

The International Association of Packaging Research Institutes (IAPRI) provides a worldwide network of packaging researchers both in industry and academia. It hosts a yearly event, alternating between a members-only symposium and an open conference.

PTS is the leading academic journal in the field of packaging. It is published by Wiley in 12 issues per year and has a 2015 impact factor of 1.706. I serve as associate editor for Design & Human Factors. I also guest-edited a special issue on human-packaging interaction. Before and after my stint as associate editor I was/am a member of the editorial board.

Co-supervising PhD projects on sustainable innovation (co-promotor of dr. Elif Kucuksayrac and dr. Duygu Keskin). Teaching an MSc module in "strategic and sustainable design" within the Integrated Product Design master of science program. Supervising master's graduation projects on strategic sustainable design, circular economy, and packaging design. Acting as one of the PhD mentors within the Industrial Design Engineering graduate school.

I have done a PhD project entitled "Thinking-about-the-Box; A holistic approach to sustainable design engineering of packaging for durable goods", which I defended in Delft in 2009. This research was aimed to determine the most sustainable way of transporting CE products from their place of manufacturing to the final customer. It was concerned with such aspects as the distribution concept, developments in retail, packaging design criteria, and transportation damage.

The Schmidt-MacArthur Fellowship is an international postgraduate fellowship on the circular economy for design, engineering and business students. Delft University is one of the Fellowship Partner Universities. The Delft student who won the 2014 Schmidt-MacArthur Fellowship is Kevin Shahbazi.

I worked at the Design Factory, on campus of the School of Science and Technology in Espoo.

In connection with my PhD project, I worked at the sustainability center of Philips CE, doing meta-analysis of their product-level environmental benchmark reports (see publications)

The Delft Student Union VSSD is the largest local union in the Netherlands with over 3000 members. The VSSD represents the interests of students towards the university, the municipality and the housing agency. The VSSD provides a range of services to students, such as low-priced books, legal advise, and low-priced insurance. The VSSD has a 5-member full-time board, supported by 5 employees and a range of student volunteers. Within the board, I was Commissioner for Education.
