Co-founder and co-inventor of the technologies that are currently being developed by Trienix Pharma, Dr. Maltais has worked as medicinal for over twenty years on the development of innovative molecules targeting important diseases such as cancer, endometriosis, and certain chronic and acute inflammatory diseases. He is also co-founder of Neolys Pharma which focusses on the treatment of cancers with poor prognosis. His work was instrumental in the design of PBRM, a molecule inhibiting 17 beta-HSD1 as a treatment candidate for patients with endometriosis. The discovery of that molecule led to a partnership with Insud Pharma (Spain). Dr. Maltais is the author and co-author of more than 95 articles in internationally renowned scientific journals as well as inventor of 10 families of patents. He also co-founded the Organic Synthesis Service, a major division of the Medicinal chemistry platform at the Research Center of the CHU de Québec. As head of this platform, he supervises more than 80 projects related with the synthesis of new molecules of interest for researchers of the research hospital.

Dr Maltais stands as a co-inventor of the anticancer molecule RM-581, which led to the creation of Neolys Pharma, being co-founder of this company. He has been working as a medicinal chemist for over twenty years on the development of innovative bioactive molecules targeting major diseases such as cancer, endometriosis, and specific chronic and acute inflammatory diseases. He is also behind the design of PBRM, a 17 beta-HSD1 inhibitor developed for the treatment of endometriosis. This molecule, the discovery of which led to a partnership with Madrid-based pharmaceutical company Insud Pharma, is about to start clinical trials.Dr. Maltais has written and co-written over 95 papers in internationally renowned scientific journals and given over 125 presentations at local, national, and international conferences. He is listed as an inventor in 10 patent applications. He is also a cofounder of the Organic Synthesis Service, a major component of the medicinal chemistry platform at the CHU de Québec. As head of this platform, Dr. Maltais has supervised more than 80 projects involving the synthesis of molecules of interest to researchers in the Quebec scientific community and beyond. He also plays an active role in training students in the laboratory, and has been contributing to various courses at Université Laval’s Faculty of Medicine. These achievements led to him winning the national award for excellence from the Fonds de recherche en Santé du Québec in 2017.

Our platform aims to develop new drugs and to create innovative tools for molecular research studies conducted by physicians, pharmacologists and molecular biologists (see scheme of activities). The CRCHU de Québec’s Medicinal Chemistry Platform combines the expertise of Drs. Donald Poirier, René C.-Gaudreault, Éric Biron and Sébastien Fortin, as well as that of the Organic Synthesis Service Team. The members of the platform have pooled their expertise and research facilities (laboratory synthesis, living culture, methodology and biological evaluation of molecular modeling systems, etc.) to provide services to the health and medical research community.
