The position of Chairman of the Board of the Foundation Empowering Others to Provide Care (SLAH) was held.The mission of SLAH is to provide ophthalmic care to people in less affluent regions in the world who do not or barely have access to this type of healthcare. In providing this care as much as possible skills and expertise are transferred to local physicians and other care providers, in order that in the longer run help from outsiders is less or entirely no longer needed. Usually the care provided consists of eye surgery replacing a clouded lens (cataract) by an artificial intraocular lens. All participating ophthalmologists and board members perform their work for SLAH on a voluntary basis without financial retribution. Since the start of the organization in 1989 support was provided in different regions in Indonesia, given the intimate relationship of several of SLAH’s ophthalmologists with that country. Due to increasing affluence in Indonesia and the growing number of ophthalmologists even in more remote regions of that country, SLAH has started projects in other parts of the world. Following up on the preparatory work in founding the new organization, from the date of inception of the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights and Medical Assessment (iMMO) the position of Chairman of the Board is held.iMMO contributes to the protection of human rights, especially by making medical assessments of suspected victims of torture and inhumane treatment and the transfer of expertise thereof. This is done especially in the context of a procedure for asylum seekers.iMMO uses free lance professionals – especially physicians and psychologists – who have the required knowledge and expertise, who commit themselves on a voluntary basis and who are not bound to iMMO by an employment contract. For two consecutive terms of each three years I served as a Board Member of Amnesty International NL. This is one of the major Sections of the international organization of Amnesty International. Special responsibilities included the founding of iMMO, the Netherlands institute for Human Rights and Medical Assessment (providing forensic medical examinations of alleged victims of torture and inhumane treatment) and international governance.

From the date of inception of the Netherlands Institute for Accreditation in Healthcare (NIAZ) the position of Vice-Chairman and from January 2001 onward the position of Chairman of the Board was held. As of April 2009 the Board was restructured into a two-tier body: a Board of Commissioners (Board of Overseers) and an Executive Board. From April 1st 2009 until January 1st 2011 a temporary term was served as the first Chief Executive. NIAZ, member of the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ISQua), accredits healthcare organizations in the Dutch speaking countries: the Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders), Aruba, Netherlands Antilles and Surinam. The latter comprising the negotiation of a collective employment and remuneration package for medical specialists. The position of Chairman of the Board of the Regional Laboratory for Healthcare in Kennemerland was held. This laboratory provides diagnostic and other services related to microbiology and infectious diseases.

The position of Vice-chairman of the Board was held at the Joint Pharmacy of the Haarlem' Hospitals (SAHZ). The Foundation serves as the guardian and administrator of the art collection of the former hospital St. Elisabeth’s of Groote Gasthuis in Haarlem, a hospital originating from the medieval age. The collection comprised several works of the painter Frans Hals, part of which has later on been donated to the Frans Hals Museum. The position of Regent in the College of Regents was held.

After participating in the foundation of the institute the position of Member of the Board was held at the Foundation for Virtual Integration of Healthcare Information (VIZI). Aim of this foundation was to contribute to the improvement of the quality of healthcare by developing necessary conditions and standards regarding IT in healthcare in order to make patient information in a standardized way available to authorized persons at any time at any location. The initiative was a precursor to the subsequently founded national institute for IT in healthcare NICTIZ, preparing the organizational setup and recruiting the management of the latter.

The position of Member of the Board was held at the Foundation for a Pilot Project on Hospital Accreditation (PACE). This organization was the precursor of the Netherlands Institute for Accreditation of Hospitals (NIAZ), founded in december 1998.Foundation PACE was discontinued at the end of the year 1999.
