Profile bio

About René Veenstra

I work on the theoretical and empirical elaboration of a social network approach to bullying. I started to collect data on who bullies with whom to study bullying networks. I also studied the processes underlying bullying and provided evidence that bullies are strategic in selecting victims (Child Development, 2010; Aggressive Behavior, 2013). Recently, I have shown that teachers can play an important role in anti-bullying programs and should be seen as targets of intervention (Journal of Educational Psychology, 2014).I have applied novel models, methods and software for examining group processes among children and adolescents finding that bullies choose their victims so as to minimize loss of affection by choosing victims who were not likely to be defended by significant others (Child Development, 2007) and that ingroup-outgroup effects are important in explaining the group process of bullying (Aggressive Behavior, 2012). I have advocated longitudinal social network analysis approach in the Handbook of Developmental Research Methods (2012) and as editor of a special issue with seventeen articles on network-behavior dynamics in the Journal of Research on Adolescence (2013). In recent years I have coordinated the evaluation of the KiVa anti-bullying program in the Netherlands (see www.kivaschool.nl). KiVa is also a unique source of information for research and analysis, and the first publications from this work have appeared in top 10% journals, showing a higher victimization rate in the classrooms of teachers who attributed bullying to external factors (Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 2014) and providing evidence for social support - victims with the same bullies defend each other over time - and retaliation - defenders run the risk of becoming victimized by the bullies of the victims they defend (Development and Psychopathology, 2014).In 2015 I received a NWO VICI grant for 'Anti-bullying programs 2.0: Tailored interventions to minimize bullying'.

Listed skills include Sociology, Quantitative Research, Statistics, Criminology, and 15 others.
