The offsite kickoff for Sabre, which became UltraSPARC-IIi, was just a small handful of engineers. But Renu grew it to a large CPU design and verification team that he led.That success led to Jalapeno, which was UltraSPARC-IIIi, with similar success, and the highest volume UltraSPARC SUN has ever sold. Renu was the program manager and team lead for both.. He put the teams together. He knew and motivated every engineer or manager on the team. He fought the corporate battles needed for success, got the needed resources, kept us focused on the goals, and helped push us to dream bigger than we would otherwise. I was the conservative hardnosed technical detail person, but Renu was the thinker that always tried to make what we were doing better. Neither project would have happened or had it's success without Renu. Engineers now in the middle of the careersstill come up to me at different companies in the valley, bragging "Hi Kevin, I worked on JBUS on Jalapeno", or some such subsystem. With big smiles on their faces. So many good engineers, and their names sometimes escape me. But Renu never forgets anyone. He never forgets what they did, and where they are now. He's a dreamer and a doer. Someone who cares deeply about both the team and product. Even though it was for internal SUN products, he kept us focused on the customer: Pete Rado and his system engineers. This customer focus was crucial, at a time when too many projects were just extensions of big egos. Like any successful team, I had sometimes had project disagreements with Renu. But Renu always listened to what I was saying, and made things right. He helped created good work assignments and situations for tons of engineers and managers that led to successful projects and healthy careers. Some of those engineers and managers still help crank out products like UltraSPARC T4 at Oracle, but they're all over the valley now. Renu did other things at SUN also, but those two projects stick out for me. I look back on those years with Renu in appreciation, as they were a big part of the success I've had in my career.
