René Salem a enseigné l'histoire au Liban pendant 11 ans. De même, il a coordonné des projets pédagogiques, socioculturels et sociospirituels au sein des établissements scolaires dans lesquels il oeuvra. Il a enrichi son expertise en se plongeant dans des lectures sur les pratiques sociales et pédagogiques en sciences humaines et sociales. Son intérêt se concentre particulièrement sur la manière dont l'enseignement de l'histoire peut influencer la perception des individus vis-à-vis du passé. Il est convaincu que la didactique joue un rôle essentiel dans l'enseignement et l'apprentissage d'une histoire authentique et nuancée, tout en favorisant le développement de la pensée critique.Actuellement, en tant que doctorant-chercheur, il contribue à différents projets de recherches dirigés par les professeurs Marc-André Éthier et Alexandre Lanoix.
