I love listening to people and writing on them. That’s what got me into journalism 22 years ago. Along the way, I discovered something about listening without an agenda --- it creates space for people to be seen and heard in ways that are meaningful to them. That got me dipping my toes into mental health and therapeutic practices. It also got me thinking about a shift in my work. From a full-time job of bringing out a daily publication on film, lifestyle and popular culture, I switched to writing and editing consultancy. It freed up time to try new things. A diploma course in Narrative Ideas and Practices that I did in 2021 --- and many workshops before and after --- opened up new approaches to storytelling, of foregrounding people and their struggles. A short training in Mental Health First Aid taught me how to be a first responder to someone in distress. To be precise, I am a mental health non-expert who is acutely aware of her role as a bystander who can help. And I know for a fact that mental health writing and documentation needs more heart. Back to where we began --- the journalistic rigor of the newsroom has become my DNA. So, I tend to obsess over researching, fact-checking, deep-diving, making room for multiple perspectives and getting the reader to the last sentence of what I have written.
