After being ordained in the United Methodist Church, I pastored in the Louisville Conference (now the Kentucky Conference) for five years. I moved to Lexington, Kentucky, and founded an interdenominational community church which I pastored for ten years. This work included a K-12 school and the Lexington Bible Institute, a regional, adult, evening Bible school.After ten years with that church, the Christian Appalachian Project, CAP, invited me to serve as the special assistant to the founder. A 46 million dollar organization in the year that I left, I learned much about Appalachian poverty and how to effectively intersect that poverty with the love of God, both through short-term answers and long-term solutions. I later served at the International Bible Society, IBS, as a Regional Director. I developed partnerships to underwrite and publish new translations of Scripture. Finishing the Chichewa New Testament for the Milawe people of Africa apprehended me, as did placing age appropriate Scripture in the hands of every orphan in the former Soviet Union - more than one million children.In the course of traveling with the Bible Society, Ukrainian orphans suddenly and unexpectedly crawled in my heart and have never let go. I spun off from IBS in 1999 to develop a ministry targeting these very children. Today, Bridges of Faith works in Ukraine with the orphans through camps, outreaches in orphanages, humanitarian aid, and leadership development.Since 2010, Bridges of Faith also brings groups of Ukrainian orphans to BridgeStone, our 140 acre retreat center in Central Alabama. Still all volunteer-driven, BOF, gives these kids a great, Christian camp experience. Most of them, about 80%, find adoptive homes.
