Managed a team of Quality Engineers responsible for hardware and software quality of high-end smart phones and tablet devices. Responsibilities encompassed both traditional product quality and quality of experience (QOE) beginning with product conceptualization and extending through end-of-life. Specific responsibilities included:- Developing hardware and software quality plans and monitoring progress against the plans.- Forecasting product field quality throughout the product development process.- Meeting with customers to review quality plans both before and after product launch.- After product launch, monitoring all available data sources for field quality issues. These sources include blog and forum comments, input from sales reps in stores, direct input from consumers, customer and Motorola call centers and triage/analysis of returned devices.- Developing new data sources to identify and understand field quality issues. Most recent example involved data mining and enhancing check-in data from handsets.- Working directly with a wide array of Motorola departments to address identified quality issues. This list of organizations includes the typical ME, EE, software, manufacturing and Supply Chain teams but also extends to System Architecture, Technology Teams, Software Testing and Reliability.- Advancing quality processes across the organization. Examples included the implementation of a “soak process” when measuring key performance indicators (KPIs) to better simulate true responsiveness of a phone in the field and the development of a measurement process and performance goals for thermal rise in a phone under specific stress condition.- Membership on the Quality Review Board (QRB).

Change Leader to drive product quality improvement. Using available field data, identified the top opportunities to improve product quality. Worked with the appropriate Technology Teams to organize quality improvement teams. Worked across all of the teams to select and define projects, obtain needed data to identify improvement opportunities, keep teams on track and progressing and present updates at regular meetings with sponsoring executive. The quality improvement teams were in call performance, audio, battery life, connectors, displays, flex circuits and imagers. - Outputs from these teams were institutionalized through a set of quality Big Rules.- Product quality as measured by field failure rate (FFR) improved by 48% from 2005 to 2007. The improvement was attributed to efforts of these teams and the resulting Big Rules and their impact on new products. - In just 3 years, we moved from being the worst supplier as measured by dropped calls to being the benchmark. - Developed a simulation tool for predicting battery life in the field. This tool dramatically improved the way current drain is being managed. The tool continued to be advanced and was in its fifth revision in 2012.
