I've had aspirations of becoming a physician ever since two knee operations resulting from high school football derailed my athletic hopes. While one door was closing, another was opening in the form of Dr. Richard Lehman, the surgeon who performed my ACL and MCL reconstructions. I had always had a knack for science and biology in school, and Dr. Lehman provided me the motivation and role model I needed to enroll in college as a Pre-Medicine major. Now in my third year at Southeast Missouri State University, I have maintained a 4.0 institutional GPA and been named to the Dean's List every semester. I've been an active member of the Delta Chi Fraternity since my first semester on campus in Fall 2018, taking over the scholarship program and being named Academic Chair in my second semester active. By incentivizing good academic performance through various programs and competitions, our chapter GPA has risen every semester since I have taken over the program, and I was recently awarded the Raymond Galbreth Leadership Award for my efforts within the fraternity. As the days bring me closer and closer to beginning medical school, I turned my focus on getting experience within the healthcare field. I have completed internships with Progress West Hospital and the U.S. Center for Sports Medicine, observing surgeries and gaining understand of the medical field. This goal of gaining more experience in healthcare led me to work as a Medical Scribe at SuccessVision. Each day, I sit in on dozens of appointments, taking detailed notes via EMR, ordering medical tests, sending prescriptions, and creating invoices, among other things. Most importantly, I am able to listen in on doctor-patient communication each day, gaining understanding that I know will serve me well in the future.
