Increased the productivity and longevity of pastures for improved sheep, dairy, beef and crop production by breeding, evaluating and commercialising the successful lucerne cultivars ‘Aquarius’, ‘Genesis’, ‘Venus’ and ‘Pegasis’. Also conceived and led a range of complementary R,D&E projects to provide additional benefits. Each new lucerne cultivar released from this program provided major benefits to agricultural productivity and sustainability. ‘Aquarius’ became an international standard for resistance to phytophthora root rot after being the first variety to incorporate a major gene for resistance. ‘Genesis’ became the largest selling proprietary lucerne variety of its time in Australia. Under dryland conditions, ‘Venus’ provided a very persistent pasture lucerne. ‘Pegasis’ delivered a highly productive lucerne variety for better crop rotations and found additional international success in a range of overseas markets.
