The New Jersey Center for Biomaterials is one of the leading biomaterials discovery and optimization centers in the world. It is home to numerous federally funded research programs, the largest of which is the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM), a five-year $42.5 M research program to develop treatments for wounded warriors. As Chief Science Officer my primary roles were; managing large scale reserch projects, assisting faculty in identifying and applying for grant, contract, and other funding opportunities, working with other university departments in facilitating the submission of applications and management of grant funds, managing intellectual property and publications, and making technology presentations to pharmaceutical, and medical device companies interested in licensing the center's technologies.Accomplishments:• Oversaw the scientific operations of the center.• Developed multiple grant applications with center faculty and in collaboration with faculty members at other research centers.• Edited grant documents and scientific reports for submission to federal and state agencies as well as peer reviewed publications.• Assisted center scientists and outside council in developing provisional patent applications as ongoing patent prosecution.• Reviewed and commented on all center contracts, including licensing and negotiating MTAs and CDAs.• Developed and delivered presentations to pharma executives educating them about the center’s resources, capabilities, and licensing opportunities.• Appointed as non-voting member of the Rutgers Cleveland Clinic Consortium Executive Committee of the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine to help identify complimentary funding sources.

21 Ventures has over $400 M under management in technologies that address current and coming societal challenges such as climate change, global urbanization, depletion of natural resources and the growing middle class in emerging markets. These investments are in energy generation by solar, wind and clean coal technologies, water resources, energy efficiency, agriculture and grid scale energy storage. As Director of Grants and Development, I hired and supervised the grant management team; assisted portfolio companies in identifying, applying for, and managing awarded grants; acted as a liaison between the firm and the granting agencies; and educated the principal investigators on granting agency rules and regulations. Accomplishments:• Hired, trained and directed a team of four managers that applied for over $100 million in grants, tax credits and loan guarantees for 40 portfolio companies.• Led the development and submission of funding applications to multiple federal agencies, including Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, Advanced Research Projects Agency, Office of Naval Research, US Army and US Treasury Department.• Conducted seminars and guest lectured on the process of developing a grant writing program at the New York Academy of Sciences, NYU Stern School of Business, and Techoire (a Sacramento, CA-based entrepreneurship education organization.)

ZenBio is a small entrepreneurial biotechnology company with a strong history of developing and marketing life science products and services to biopharmaceutical companies, universities, research institutes, and other life science organizations. The company conducts research in-house and also partners with leading academic institutions such as Tufts, Duke, and Rutgers. As COO of ZenBio I managed the finances of the manufacturing operations; identified grant opportunities for the company and its academic research partners; contracted with universities and corporations for research projects; and recruited external research partners for multi-site, multi-partner research programs including term sheet and contract development. Accomplishments:• Designed, initiated and supervised company’s first grant writing program resulting in over $10M in SBIR/STTR funding: $8M for new product development and $2M for university research collaborations.• Negotiated a contract with Duke University researchers that reduced by six months the development time of a new cell system useful in breast cancer research.• Increased company’s indirect cost rate from 50% to 85%, adding over $1M in indirect revenue over four years, by more accurately quantifying costs in grant budgets and justifications.• Achieved over $500,000 in awarded funds by identifying new grant opportunities of interest to research collaborators at Duke, LSU-Pennington and Rutgers University.• Renegotiated annual purchase agreements and service contracts from major vendors resulting in a 20% reduction in manufacturing costs.• Profit and Loss responsibility with a four fold increase in revenues and a 2 fold increase in customer base during time there.
