In another life I was a biochemist and always fancied being involved in forensic science. However a conversion to law followed and a few years as a high street solicitor. But life behind a desk was not for me and after a brief period of running a farm diversification website, I moved to abroad. I spent 14 years mostly living in Bulgaria, but also France and Austria and time in Greece. In Bulgaria I was initially involved in property development and property sales, building up and selling a portfolio of property over the years and helping others invest in the country. But over time my focus mostly shifted to dog rescue and helping rehabilitate and re-home stray, abused and abandoned dogs. I re-homed over 300 dogs from the street and shelters. I also set up and ran neutering projects for street dogs and owned dogs and cats. In 2020 I moved back to the UK to become more involved in the running the family business - Gawith Hoggarth & Co tobacco manufacturers. I have successfully built up a large following on social media for the Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith tobacco brands and work with the sales team on promotional ideas and marketing and brand recognition as well as work on the HR and health and safety side of things. I am researching and starting to write a book on the discovery and growth of the tobacco industry and the connection with Kendal and the Gawith family. But my passion is still with animal welfare, especially dogs. I am a staunch advocate for spay and neuter as do not feel we can 'rescue' our way out of the massive over population of dogs and cats around the world, especially in countries like Bulgaria, Romania etc. I am also an advocate for much tighter regulations on the import of dogs to stop the massive illegal puppy import trade and to try and reduce the huge numbers of foreign imported dogs ending up in the UK rescue system due to a lack of adequate rescue back up. UK rescues and shelters are struggling and its reaching crisis point with so many animals being put to sleep for lack of space and resources. And linked to all that is the sale of dogs and other animals on sites like pets4homes, gumtree and preloved often used for puppy peddling and illegal dog breeding.
